OK. You've decided to install monster Valves in that screaming slant six mill of yours. All the numbers work out, and you've figured out or payed somebody to massage the head so that the valves don't get shrouded in the head.

It ought to work.

My build has 300 Ford valves. Lot's of folks do it, and those cars go like stink on poo. Gotta work, right?

Not so fast Skippy.

The alignment pins are not neccesarily going to place the head in the optimal location on the block.

I found my head to be shifted to the rear of the block. How did I find this? My exhaust valves on 4, 5 and 6 hit and left damage on the top of the cylinder walls. The valves were bent, and I experienced an ongoing smoke problem on launch.

Doc has encountered missalignment of the combustion chamber over the bore as well. This isn't an isolated occurance.

Make sure to check!

Ceej, what is the overbore on your motor? Some bigger valves require a bore notch if the block is at standard or +.030" over.

When I used Ford 300 valves in my +.030" bore engine I had my machinist cut the exhaust valves from 1.56" down to 1.45". Engnbldr exhaust valves are 1.44" and so far have cleared the stock bore of my '67 Valiant's 225 just fine AFAIK.

And that would have done the trick. :D

We cut the Diameter of the Ford valves .060"

That should solve it.

My bore is 3.44, and I still tagged bores 4,5, and 6.

1, 2, and 3 were fine.

The valves were pretty "Thick" as well. With the bevel cut, they should be much further from the bores.

My junk has 1.50 valves too. On the block I'm picking up from Mike next weekend I went +.100" to end the suspense.

Not a lot of cam lift. This is the RV15M RDP Doug put together. Should be close to the MP 244 profile on the exhaust.

My machinist has always said to assemble the heads onto the block after machining and use some die and a scratchawl to scribe the bores onto the head, to check for shift and clearance...and get an idea what may need to get relieved.

hopefully you got 'er lick'd this time...

The Deck has .125" off. The head had .015" off.

It now has .040" off the head, total. I have 48cc chambers now.

There are some dowl pins in the shop to play with, but I'm wondering how to get an accurate measurement of how far to shift the head without tearing the engine down.

The .030" of radius we've removed from the valve may do the trick by itself. I measured the damage to the bore, but need to take another look before trusting the .020" measurement from yesterday.

I have used 1.50 valves on a couple of 0.030" over motors, but I notched all the exh sides of the bores to make sure.

Today I notched for the valves, and put everything back together with Fopar and Mike's help. They also delivered a valve machine for me to play with. Talk about full service delivery! :D

We fired up and relashed the valves. It runs much stronger now.

Mike pulled his '68 Dart into the driveway, and lashed his valves. After he dug all the crud out of the valve cover with a machette and leaf blower.

It sounds like theres a bit of cam in his recent aquisition. It'll be fun to get it to the track and get a baseline on it! Knowing Mike, the Dart will be running respectable times real soon!

It's been a great day. The Hooptie is happy, and I can finally get the GT into the driveway to strip for paint!
