Need information about priming oil pump and system before starting new motor. Is there an easy way? This is a new, not rebuilt 225 with many hi-po parts. I don't want to damage anything! Thanks |

One way is to crank engine for a few seconds at a time without starting (coil lead off) until oil light goes out. Then fire it up. Not sure if possible to spin pump with an external shaft. Internal shaft removed to build up pressure. Others will know for sure. My thinking is if internals were lubricated well during assembly as they should be then cranking wont cause any wear, build up pressure and away you go! Depends how fussy you want to get. |

You can use an exturnal oil "pressure can" to prime a SL6 or just fill the filter with oil before installation and start cranking. DD |

Remove the oil pump cover plate and hand-pack ordinary vaseline into the cavities between the gear and the rotor, then reinstall the cover plate. The oil pump will lift oil much faster than if you start out dry. Because of the design of the slant-6 oil pump and distributor drive, spin-priming (as on a V8 ) is not possible. |

Where did you find a new one? In a crate somewhere?Quote: Remove the oil pump cover plate and hand-pack ordinary vaseline into the cavities between the gear and the rotor, then reinstall the cover plate. Dan I understand your reasoning for a dry positive type pump, taking up the clearances will start pumping earlier, But I have a question : Were Slant 6 factory workers in the 60's and 70's packing the oil pump before first fire or is this a later idea?

No, the pumps weren't packed at the factory. |
