Post subject:  Header Question

I have some Slant 6 Headers, and I heard that there were two different kinds made, car and truck, so i was wondering, how do I tell the difference?

From there, how difficult is it to swap the manifold to the headers? Does the intake come off?

Are there exhaust gaskets that I'd have to buy? What else would I need?

Any tips or other info is appreciated, thanks everyone.

I'd say the first pic is correct the big bends are to clear the stater.

Those are the "old" style Cliffords, for the 66 older "A" bodies. They are almost impossible to find. There were two different versions. One for the 225 engine, and one for the 170 engine. There is a small difference in the length, due to the difference in the hight of the engines. It is very hard to tell the difference, just by looking at them. If you don't use them, I would be interested in buying them.

yes, the intake has to come off

you will need intake/exhaust gasket. Will have to have the exhaust system modified to connect to the headers.
These headers will help, even on a stock engine, but the front pipes go down thru the "K" member, then turn to the rear. They hang pretty low, and can hit the ground on bumps. Clifford's old catalog, actually says, "14 wheels required".

Be sure to put a straight-edge across the port flanges to be sure they are flat. I have had many sets of tube steel headers where this surface was way-off and no gasket would ever seal.

Modifying the exhaust is no problem. Can I get the gaskets anywhere? Not too woried about hitting the ground, but eventually, I will go to 14 inch wheels.

You have to have the correct ones for the engine. They are most likely for the 225. The only 170 ones I have seen, are the ones Jack made for me, back in the '70's. I have seen 225 ones show up at swap meets and on line, so it seems like there were more of the 225 ones made. The only way to tell for sure is to try them.

Go with the Remflex gaskets,with the headers it will take up some warping,twisting etc of the flange area.I'd do a "dry"fit to make sure the headers are correct and clear eveything,then bend,hammer what ever.When its good to go then on with the Remflex dot com,some napa stores will order them for you or go direct.Good folks there and AWESOME gasket :D
