Can you shorten axles from a 73 D100 truck to fit in an A-body 8 3/4 housing, or will that make the splines too short for a good mesh? If so, about how much do people charge to shorten axles? Is is better to just buy some Moser (or similar) axles? |

I had axles from several early 70's D100 shortened/resplined by Moser to A Body size. There's plenty of meat on the axles to do that. I don't recall the cost but thought it was reasonable. I'd check with Moser on Monday for pricing.

On this topic I have access to a 472 casing 8 3/4 for a C- body - I already figured getting it narrowed is not an issue BUT how does this unit compare weight wise with the stock 7 1/4 or 8 1/4 Unsprung weight and road holding is my worry as well as ride comfort |

I don't know what the weight difference is between the 3, although I'm sure the 7 & 1/4 is the lightest. Bear in mind that although any C Body housing is suitable for shortening to A Body size, not all axles are. I believe you have to measure from the axle flange about 28 inches. This is where the axle shortening and resplining will be for a stock A Body size. Most C Body axles have a step in this area, making them not suitable for this procedure. Per Autohobby digest, 72-74 D100 axles as well as early 70's C Body wagon axles are the ones to use for shortening/resplining to A Body specs.

I had a set of E body axles cut and resplined. E, C, and truck/van are what will work. Last time I had Moser do any axles it was around $85 for the cut and respline. http://www.moserengineering.com/ |
