Post subject:  engine is off, but gas is still running?
i "think i found the problem to my high idle" (base carb gasket had some dirt on it) . my 1945 1b carb is dripping gas when engine is off, what could cause this?

the carbs i know are tilsons, mics, and kihein so please bare with me.

It could cause hard starting, flooding, smelling gas after shutdown. It most likely needs a new needle and seat and/or the float is set too high.

The fuel line mod makes less chance for excess pressure in the line which ruins the needle/seat prematurely.

I've been thinking about this one...How could it ruin the needle and seat? I would think that excess pressure in the line would simply push the needle open and push the float up....


Maybe I'm missing something? :D

The floats tend to swell and hang up on the sides. You can carefully rebend them or just buy new ones. Once you get them set, then adjust flat height. Be sure to replace the needle and seat to be sure they are sealing.

Nah, I just typed before putting my brain in gear. It probably doesn’t ruin the needle/seat but if they’re worn any at all (and maybe when new) it can’t hold the extra pressure. It would work fine without the extra pressure, so in essence, the needle/seat stops sealing pre-maturely.

the dodge is alive. took it for a spin and runs decent, just a little rough with a low idle.The paper gasket on my carb over laped just a little becuase before i took it apart the stream of gas, shot from the accelerator pump was spitting and took very long(sticking?), but now a very short nice stream and it starts pretty good.But if any more problems i will consider the needle and seat.

would it matter that my manifold bolts be torqued exactly the same? had a hard time torqueing some of them so i just did a educated guess.

would any body have tips on getting more torque, I'm gona try a lean burn and advanceing the timeing a little bit but would anyhave more ideas?

thanks for all your help, i'm now some what more familiar with the slant 6, so i might put a wrench on the main pully nut on that valliant and a battery and see what happens, give you guys an up date. and try to take pics of that impala and galaxay maybe next week sometime.thanks again.

Lean burning is usually bad news.

Rough idle can be caused by a great many things. What is you initial timing set at? Have you tried adjusting the idle mixture screw to see what it does?

Also, to check for vacuum leaks around the manifold area, take a can of carb spray, and while the engine is running, shoot it around the base of the carb, and all of the gasket surfaces. If the idle changes/runs better or worse, you've got a vacuum leak, hence a rough idle.
