Post subject:  dipsticks

I've had my 225 rebuilt for my 72 swinger, however the crank has sheared of my dipstick 3 times. The engine rebuilder has not repaired the problem. My problem is how do I know how much oil I have.
My question is how long should the dipstick tube be and how long should my dipstick be?
There is oil in there, 'cause I stuck a long one in to check, and it shows about 3 and a half inches from the bottom of the pan......
help!

Hello and welcome. What year and model car are you working on? Does it have A/C? Different cars got different length dipsticks, and A/C cars sometimes got longers dipsticks.

Oh, duh, I should have read you post closer. 72 swinger. D'OH! But what about A/C?

Usually when this happens the fix is to bend the top of the dipstick tube TOWARDS the engine to andle the bottom of the dipstick away from the crank.

I understand how to repair the tube direction, but this does not help with the oil level. No a/c. now I have no dipstick to check the oil, and am wondering if the length of the tube the rebuilders used is correct

also have another dipstick and tube from a 70 dart 225 but the tube is a different length, hence the question of did the engine rebuilders use the correct tube in the begining

In 72, the tube should be about 6 inches long.
I have some good used dipsticks so send me a PM if you need a replacement.

Hello,
Glad to see another slant lover! Actually you are focused on the wrong issue. While it would be nice to have the "right" dipstick, what you are wanting is the "right oil level and a way to measure it.

Merely drain your oil and change your filter then put back in the correct number of quarts of oil for a complete change including filter. (Probably 5) Turn on the engine to see if it leaks from the plug. If not let it sit an hour or so, pull whatever dipstick you have scrounged up and file a mark at the level of the oil on the stick. Inasmuch as that is "full" that is your future target.

They probably won't either. No offense to engine builders, but I have alot of friends who have run into problems with their builders not doing something correctly, and the builder not responding.

Since the dipstick is easy to make, then I would suggest forgetting about them unless something catastrophic happens, and be on your way..
