Many times the ratio is stamped onto the center section flange.

Try as I might, I can't find what the stock factory gear ratios were for my 66 Valiant. My quasi-scientific "spin the wheel" procedure indicates low "2s". Is that possible? Thanks in advance |

Doc does that stamping also indicate whether its a suregrip or not? Or is there another visible identifier to look for? MJ |

Suregrips have a seperate tag under one of the cover bolts, near the fill plug. The tag says: "Use Sure Grip Lube" but it is better to check the assembly by jacking the car up and seeing if both rear wheels turn in the same direction, when one wheel is rotated. DD

In '66, the standard ratios were 3.23 with 170 engine (manual or auto), 3.23 with 225/manual, and 2.93 with 225/auto. If your car still has its original rear axle, odds are it's one of those. To check the rear axle ratio accurately, chalk the inboard sidewall of the tire that'll turn and block the other tire (or don't lift it up) so that it can't turn even a little bit. Trans in Neutral, parking brake released. Turn the marked tire through two full revolutions and count quarter-turns of the driveshaft by watching the rear U-joint caps as they come to face the pavement. Divide the number of quarter-turns by four to get your ratio. 16/4 = 4 = 3.91 14/4 = 3-1/2 = 3.54 or 3.55 13/4 = 3-1/4 = 3.21 or 3.23 12/4 = 3 = 2.93 or 2.94 11/4 = 2-3/4 = 2.71 or 2.76 10/4 = 2-1/2 = 2.45 9/4 = 2-1/4 = 2.26 |

Cool I was just wondering how I'd ID one without having the wheels in the air on a car. Not that I have 5x4 anymore anyway, but inquiring minds want to know!MJ |
