Unfortunately It seems that my carburetor, or something within it, has finally gave way (im guessing from the engine hesitation it was causing). I was driving it today and it backfired, then the gas pedal pulled to the floor revving almost full throttle while I was taking off from a complete stop. I was able to get the gas pedal to return back to normal, but I had to play with the throttle at stop lights or else it would stall completely.(a few people thought I wanted to race them Lol) Im pretty sure it was the carburetor or something within it, but if you have any other suggestions or can give a most likely scenario please tell me because I want to be sure. possibly the Accelerator pump?

it is possible that it is the Accelerator pump. To test, get out, take off air cleaner and have someone step on the gaS PEDAL. If you see a good squirt going down the carb your good. If you have some carb cleaner,turn on the engine ,spray the carb body and base listening for the idle to change. You can have vaccum leaks and check the bolts holding the carb body together, they can work loose.

Alright, ill have to work on it tomorrow. but why would this cause the gas pedal to stick and be somewhat difficult to get it back to normal?

Did your throttle return spring break? or get hooked up to the wrong spot?

Wow, this reminds me of a rambler wagon my dad told me he once had (his first car). It would accelerate uncontrolably until he shut it off, and restarted it. Then it was fine for a little while. He replaced the carb from another car, and it did the same thing. The engine caught fire shortly after.

My first thought was the accelerator cable is binding somehow.

The car runs fine now, I bought some carb. cleaner and it helped a lot. Weird, but as I was revving it under the hood a dead 3" water bug came out of my carb Lol. and the throttle works fine now, but it probably needs a new cable though because it stuck.

Well it looks like you got the bugs worked out of this problem.

Yeah, but now it needs a water pump, its starting to leak water. at least thats a cheap fix.

water bugs and gas? can't be a good combo

I had a similar problem on my '66 Valiant... 'cept it was spiders that came out....
