Post subject:  Headliner removal and reinstall

My headliner in my 64 2dr valiant is in perfect condition I believe its the original headliner. I am planning on stripping the interior to repaint and wanted to know if its possible to remove the headliner and then reinstall it after the interior is painted?

It may be possible, but it will never ever fit or look right again.

Plan on getting a new one, and look on line for a DYI video on headliner installataion that can be rented. There are a few tricks to make the job come out looking real nice vs a bunch of puckers & wrinkles.

Why not just mask it off?
Every car that I have ever worked on has some surface rust on the inside of the roof but I have yet to see one rusted out from the inside.

Absolutely, mask it off. It may look perfect, but if it is the original headliner, the fabric is 45 years old and weaker than you might think. It will not survive being removed and reinstalled

One thing I should have added. Hope it's not too late.
Don't go cheap on the tape. Use a painting tape, not the masking tape at the grocery store. I use 3M's 233+ tape. It has a water-based adhesive that doesn't leave any residue on the surface. It is also not too sticky. An aggressive adhesive may damage your headliner.
