Snapping wheels studs is not normal and should be investigated. A spacer should not be needed to cure the wheel stud breakage.

It wasn't the studs, it was the lug nuts. The cragars were too close to the drums on the front and one of the nuts (usually the last one) would bind and snap the "shank" or what ever its called off. The wheel spacers solved that problem.

I see why now. The shanks are too long without the spacer on the front. Are your wheels aluminum? The only time I've ever seen the need for shanked lug nuts is with something like slot mags, where there is no bevel on the lug holes of the wheels. Can't you use standard lug nuts?

Ahh, you had lug nuts that were too long. You can get different lengths so I would find shorter ones and ditch the spacer.

just a thought-- why not put the smaller tires on the front? the wheels are the same -- just different tire sizes? Lawrence

Has anyone noticed from my pics that my front wheels stick out more than my rear wheels? I had to put 1/8" spacers in the fromt because I kept snapping lug nuts, could that be the problem? My tires are 205/75R14 in the front and 195/75R14s in the rear (it was like that when I got it). Both rims are 14x6.

Front track on these cars is wider than the rear. It's normal. Snapping wheels studs is not normal and should be investigated. A spacer should not be needed to cure the wheel stud breakage.

You were snapping the nuts? Or the studs? These studs break off pretty easily... what torque were you putting them on at? They only require ~50 ft. lbs. Anymore than that and they have a habit of snapping. I broke 3 in a row doing that before I figured out what it was. I would think a spacer would actually make the problem worse, the torque on the stud is farther out, so there is more stress on it.... interesting. ~THOR~

The nuts would snap at 50 to 55 ft lbs.

Can't you use standard lug nuts? ~THOR~ Im not sure if Cragar SSs are aluminum or not. The studs don't even stick out when you put the rims on, so I can't use regular lug nuts. I had to special order the new lug nuts from Cragar.

The spacers shouldn't be a problem... unless a wheel flies off around a hard cornering maneuver, then I would leave it alone...unless you want to install longer studs, which are available. ~THOR~

A 1/8" spacer won't hurt anything. We used to have a Camaro that had stock spacers (forgot front or rear) that were about 1/8" thick.
