I'm with the majority. If you can get a dull wood chisel to bear, try to tap it behind the head of the bolt and unbolt. Wear eye protection. Better not to drill your way out of the crisis.

Ok stupid me screwed something up big. Here is the problem I put one of the flex plate to crank bolts in the crank and was using it to hold the engine from turning over while I was installing the harmonic balancer. (the engine is on a stand fyi). Well I guess I really over torqued that bolt because now I cannot get it to back out of the hole. The bolt spins both ways but will not start to back out of the hole. I think I tightened it to point where the shoulder of the bolt maybe pressed into the hole or else I've stripped the threads on the bolt or in the end of the crank or both!!!ARHGGG. Any ideas on how to get that thing out of there without having to disassemble the engine and take the crank into the machine shop? The head of the bolt is right flush to the crank hub so I am a little worried about trying to take a hack saw to the bolt head. Could I drill it out any way?? In a little over my head here and could use some help. And I was planning on putting the engine in the car this weekend but I guess that's out the window.....X$&(@&@QR**R@#(*%@*@(%*@)@* |

Have you tried to pry under the head of the bolt with something like a screwdriver or chisel while turning the bolt? you may have ruined he threads in the crank. but you can repair them on there.you may also have to tap on the chisel to separate them |

The head of the bolt is flush with the crank hub. I can't even get the blade of a hack saw in there. I pulled the pan and rear main seal and tried pushing on the end of the bolt that comes through the crank but it will not bite and back out. Really at my wits end here...one thing after another.... |

I believe you have stripped the threads in the crank. Sorry. (1) Take out all other flex plate to crank bolts. (2) Using a long screw driver or pry bar, as close as possible to the bolt, pry the flew plate away fron the crank as you turn the bolt. This will be easier if you can find a helper. Alternatively, if possible, get a pair of vise grips grabbed ontop the head of the bolt and pull out with that as you loosen the bolt. |

The flex plate is off just the one bolt there I was using to try and keep the engine from turning over. I can't get anything in behind the head of the bolt to pry on it. Can I drill out the center of the bolt till just about the same size as the thread and then collapse the head and remainder of the bolt in on itself? What type of drill bit would I need? titanium or cobalt to get through the bolt. |

I might suggest you go ahead and try to drill it, but start with a small pilot hole. Maybe even drill & tap to 1/4" threads. Then grind off the flex plate bolt head, turn a 1/4" bolt in, and try to screw it out the other side. It may thread on through for you, but won't bite enough to back out. The other option is a Dremel and a handful of grinding bits once the head has been done away with. Roger |
