I was reading the article on 4 speeds with overdrive, and it was just a bit wonky for me. shift pattern 1-2-4-3? This just doesn't make sense? Why wouldn't 4th gear just be used as the last cruising gear? IS there like knob you press or or something for overdrive? This is just foreign to me.

The shift pattern would be like that IF the shift toggles on the box were attached like standard 4 speed box, the front 3/4 toggle has changed ... the 3 and 4 gears had switched locations from the regular 4 speed assembly...
It would make sense if you took one apart... 3rd gear now locks the input shaft and main shaft together, but O/D uses the countershaft to reroute power much like the 1st and 2nd gears... this is the only real 'weakness' of the late boxes since the force from the engine in O/D can really put some pressure on the gears and countershaft assembly...
