I have some questions. What is ping, or detonation, or whetever you call it? How/what is it caused buy? What does it sound like? I have been wondering for a while, so I thought I should ask.

Thanks! :D

It sounds like BBs or marbles being rattled around in a coffee can. It's got many causes — spark plugs of too high a heat range, too much spark advance, insufficient fuel octane, carbon buildup in combustion chambers, exhaust restriction — but certain causes are more likely than others, depending on the rest of the circumstances. Wikipedia has a good article on the subject here.

Thanks, but I had heard that the sound was more of a "ringing" sound, which I had heard from my engine a while ago, and then it stopped. So its more of a knocking sound then like you said, BBs in a can? I have a "putting" sound out of my tail pipe at idle, and I was wondering if that was it, but I guess not. What could that putting sound be anyway? Valve adjustment needed? (note: it did this with my old carb and ignition too)

A valve adjustment might not be a bad idea. "Ping" is a litle bit of a misnomer because it suggests there's a ringing sound, when in fact there is not. You won't get pinging at idle.

Up for this week: Trans and Valve adjustments. Up for next week: who know what will go wrong next?

What could cause thet "putting" sound. Some car book I read said it could be a loose exhaust valve, but it only does it warm in idle.

Do the valve lash adjustment and see if that helps.
