400 or 500 CFM Carter AFB. harder to find, but WAY easier to tune than a Holley. Less prone to gas leaks too. Alternatively, you could build an adapter plate and mount a two barrle on there. That would be my recommendation for cheapness, ease of tuning, and low end torque. |

| Post subject: | Another vote for the 390 Holley |
I am using the 525 Demon on my car. I was attracted to the features like center hung floats, metering blocks, 4 corner idle, etc. Also thought my car might go faster with more CFM. Had to send the carb back to BG twice to fix mis alligned throttle plates and metering block leaks. Works fine now, gets great gas milage. Doesn't seem to perform better than the 500 Holley 2 barrel I used to run, that one is actually a 375CFM in 4 barrel terms. That must be enough for a high performance street machine, so go with the 390 Holley. It is always best to keep the venturies as small as possible consistent a stong top end. You'll have to settle for a metering plate and single inlet to stay in your price range though. Good luck. |

My box stock Holley 390 works pretty well on my stock cammed '67 vintage 225. The idle has gone down hill a bit lately so I think it's time to open it up and clean it out. If one could buy a new 400 CFM AFB I'd go for that. My last Holley 390 worked well on my hotter 225 also. If someone would loan me an Eddy 500 I'd try it, but I'm not going to go buy one. The primary venturis of the list 8007 390 Holley 4 bbl are 1 1/16". This is smaller than even the list 7448 350CFM Holley 2bbl which is 1 3/16". This draws more on the main circuit which is reflected in the 51 primary jet of the 390 and the 61 jet of the 350 2bbl. Having a stronger signal typically means better metering performance which leads to improved response and economy. This is why I'm running the 390 instead of a 350 or 500 CFM Holley 2bbl. |

Any carb can be made to run on a slant, my 600 is too big by nit picker standards but it runs well on street, Very well on highway and puts up good numbers at the track! You have to be willing to tune the carb, not just turn the idle screws. Four barrels are for race cars if you want a street car get a 2 bbl and have at it! TF |

For the most part we've been pretty happy with the Holley 390's. With that said we're gonna pull it off the Valiant this winter and use a Quadrajet. We're thinking we will get some better fuel mileage and a bit better drive ability. Only time will tell if our thoughts hold true or not. Stay tuned for news at 11:00. |

I didn't know you could get a 500 AVS from Edelbrock.

Another choice is the 450 CFM spreadbore Holley 4360 economaster carb. You would wire the secondaries shut or have them open later. This carb gives me great performance and good gas mileage in my Ford van (351W), but should work okay on a slant too. |

I'm curious to learn your results. I have a tricked up Q-Jet and thought I'd try it, but then I laid the spreadbore gasket on my Offy and Clifford manifolds and did not like the huge overlap. The throttle bores ended well outside the standard opening and I don't have the hood clearance for a big adapter.
