Post subject:  The By-Pass hose just blew !!
The By-Pass hose between the head and the water pump just blew out:

1) Just did a quick search, and didn't find anything, Is it possible to replace it without removing the water pump?

2) Where is the best place to get a new one? One online discount store wants $49, ..... for a 2" piece of straight hose???? :shock:
It almost looks like a piece of heater hose will fit? Any one know the ID required? Or is that not heavy enough?

I wonder how good antifreeze is as a de-greaser ....... the engine bay sure got a bath. :lol:

5/8 heater hose seems to ring a bell to me but I could be wrong. Of course use a piece of heater hose, don't put the clamps on. Squish the hose on one side like a slinky. A little vaseline might help too. Just ease them into place, it takes some convincing but I've done it lots without removing the water pump. Thread the clamps around and tighten. now if it's a 170 you may be out of luck with this process.

That's totally up to you. I definitely have re-used them when I didn't have a new one on hand but for the most part they are going to be hard and brittle from being saturated in hot oil for a long period. If you can bend it without it cracking and it doesn't have a permanent indent from being over tightened then you may get away with it. Leaky valve covers suck.

I'm reusing one right now. I adjusted my valves a couple days ago, if the valve cover would have leaked I have another. It isn't leaking so I still have my extra for another time.

I didn't use sealant either, I just wiped the gasket and gasket surface on the head real good and bolted the valve cover back on. I also left the gasket in the valve cover without disturbing it when I removed the cover. The only handling was when I gently wiped it dry.

5/8in heater hose is all you need cut the hose to lenght so it will just bottom out on both nipples, push it on the pump first then use a dull flat top screw driver squat the back edge of the hose across the nipple out of the head and use the screw driver to slip it into place,w-d or some lube will help, if it`s a 170 you have to take the pump of. with the top pan gasket if it is still soft and not brittle clean it and silicone it to the cover only and tighten it down you will be good to go.

It's a 225, and I need to set the valves, I figure the valve cover will be on and off a couple of times to do it, so the rubber gasket is the way to go.

$49? I just bought about 8' of 5/8 heater hose yesterday, and a few other small items, for $11.-something. I wonder how many $49 "slant 6 bypass hoses" I could make out of the left over; :roll: :twisted: I'll make you a deal; if you buy one in the next 5 minutes, I'll go 1/2 price, and include 3 free. And I'll pay shipping; let's see; $25 for what amounts to a total of about a foot of heater hose there; It's still cheaper than the $49 you were quoted! Next 2 callers also get free clamps!

But Advance Auto already discounted the by-pass hose to $49.99 form $80!! I'm not joking, they list a by-pass hose and this is what pops Up, Hey, at least it's a Gates product! :wink:

But even if the heater hose is not quite up the the standard of the Gates hose, I could replace it once a year for the next 100 years. :shock:


So, I plunked down my hard earned $1.49 for a foot of NAPA's best quality hose and just got done replacing it. Much easier than I anticipated, it slipped right on with a bit of Vaseline and persuasion. :)

Have you ever had to buy a full box of heater hose? Who mail orders straight heater hose anyway?
