My trans "slips" when the car is not fully warmed up. I will go into gear fine (at first), but when I stop or slow down, its like im in neutral. I have to rev on and off to get it into gear, and when it catches, it usually squeels the tire and jerks really hard. Any one know what the problem is? I did a fluid/filter change and 4.5 qts of fluid. It has done this scince I did the change. It shifts fine when its warmed up.

Did you adjust the bands and linkages when you changed the fluid and filter? Did you drain the torque converter?

No to all of them, except the kick down. I am not familiar with even how to do that. Could I possibly take it to a trans shop? There is a guy here in town that has been in business for years and has worked on these cars before.

Yep, band adjustments are called for every once in awhile...probably time for more than a simple fluid/filter change.

Yeah, I agree that's likely THE problem in this case. 4.5 quarts after a drain is about half enough (if the converter plug was pulled) and about 2/3 enough if not.

Of course there may be bigger problems after abusing it that way....

Sounds like the trans is low on fluid .Did you check it in park or neutral ? if checked in park then your overall level will be low.Check it in neutral.Good luck ...Dee.

Ditto on the fluid check.

Had a buddy run his Charger while doing the same stuff you described. He thought it was cool until he bounced the driveshaft off the front of the bank building in the little town we lived in.

It was 2 quarts low on fluid.

Ok, let me make this clear, I did not drain the converter. It was just a simple fluid/filter change. The last time we did it we put 4.5 qts in and it said it was a pint low. We added another 1/2 qt and is was still low. so we added another qt. It still registered 1 pint low, so we left it. Not 40 mi later, it blew the trans pan gasket. So we got another gasket, put in about 4.5 qts and left it at that. Even when it had 6 qts in it, it still did the same thing its doing now. BTW, I checked the fluid when the car was fully warmed up, and in neutral.

Looks like some adjustments are in order. I would recommend not driving it until you have time to adjust everything... I didn't pay attention to mine (was acting the same as yours) then suddenly the problem went away, figured it was because it had been sitting for 6 months or so.... week later.. "Hmmm the RPM's are coming up, the car is going slower, and there's this burnt smell hanging out with the white smoke coming out of my car.."

Hopefully you haven't driven it much since it started this episode... if so, you might be looking at a rebuild... or another trans.

Keep us informed.

Umm, thats not good... Great, another $500 bucks I don't have to go into that thing. I have no idea how to adjust a trans. Its a daily driver, and I drive about 40 mi a day! I kept forgetting to post the problem on here for a while!

Time for an a-833?

If you don't have money and time to replace the automatic, you definitely don't have money and time to retrofit a stick-shift! Don't count this transmission out just yet — get those bands adjusted right away. There's wide enough interchange on that transmission that if you wind up needing a replacement, you ought to be able to find a good used one without much difficulty.

Agreed. I got my replacement for a wonderful price.... free. From a generous man by the name of Paul Olds/Sixpar. If there is another vehicle that you can borow to drive until you get a chance to adjust everything, I would insist that you take that route.
