| Post subject: | Disassembling 85 Truck 4 Speed Overdrive Hurst Shifter |
I'm adapting a 85 Dodge truck hurst shifter to an A body 833 overdrive using shifting rods from an A body. There is a 1/4 inch thick plate attached to the truck shifter that attaches the shifter to a truck type A-833 that needs to be removed. The pivot bolt for the shifter assembly goes thru this plate. There must be a clip holding the pivot bolt to the shifter assembly which prevents me from sliding the pivot bolt out and removing the plate. My guess is that the shifter will disassemble also when the bolt is removed. I plan on inserting a bolt simultaneously from the outside when extracting the bolt. Anyone every take one of these apart and knows how the bolt is restrained? Is there a restraining clip. If so how is it removed? |

No clip involved, the bolt is frozen to the 5/8 OD 7/16 ID x 2 1/8 long shifter bushing. Once I cut off the bolt head the bushing/frozen bolt drove out of the Hurst shifter assembly in one rusted hunk. I need to find round mechanical tubing, preferably stainless, to replace the worn bushing that was also frozen to the bolt. Hurst parts online do not seem to help. My Ryerson Stock catalogue lists the precise size I need (in carbon steel not 304 SS) so finding a distributor willing to sell a short length is the next step |

Update: I used a 5/8 bolt and put a step or shoulder on it at 2 1/8 down from the head. The remaining portion uses a a 7/16 x 14 thread. It successfully bolts thru the shifter and to the "A" body transmission spacer. The 5/8 bolt serves as the shifter bushing and the step insures the bolt doesn't crush or jam the shifter assembly. |
