Post subject:  Turbo reccomendations

Hi all I am in need of some turbo advice, I found a Garrett TAO301 off a crusty '89 mercedes turbo diesel specs are:

Garrett model number: TA0301 (T3 series turbo)

OE Part #: 465228-3 Compressor housing A/R: .42

Turbine housing A/R: .48

Horsepower Capabilities: ~250hp

Internal Wastegate: Yes

Water cooled: No

Wastegate setting: 7 psi

only issue is the waste gate is toast, and there is slight side to side shaft play. but I can snag it for about $65 with core charge, or I can get a brand new Holset H1C spec are :

externally gated turbo with a divided entry exhaust housing. Specs are:
55/82mm compressor (45 trim), 67/63mm turbine (1.13trim), 18cm3 (divided entry). For about $350 obo. but would still need a external wastegate, and blow off valve.

Which would be a better bet to go with ? I am still trying to snag a HX35W, but I ain't spending $400+ on a used turbo !!

or as faar as the nitty gritty:

1979 PLymouth Volare (gutted )

just a dash, hurst floor mounted shifter, bench seat, belts.

No blower box, heater core, back seat, interior trim, headliner.

it has a '76 904, '86 8 1/4" rear (pretty sure 2.76 gears) open rear.

Was going to weld the spider gears for now just till my ass can afford a nice detroit locker with some 3.23's or 3.55's.

I would say not to get the Mercedes turbo. To small and in need of work. The turbo is the most important part of your system. Get what you want and build your system around it. Maybe some others have more input on what turbo size you should get. I vote for the HX35. Check out e-bay for one. Later.

The mercedes is about the same as the dodge 2.2 turbos

The holset would probably work, IIrc, the h1c is similar to the hx35

This is just from my half broken brain, so be careful :!:

True but that means a external waste gate, but a brandnew turbo, not rebuilt, new..... * still has that new turbo smell*

The H1c and HX35 are almost exactly the same spec.
The HX series come with or without internal wastegate too.
You would need to change the actuator for the wastegate on the Holset as most are around 28-30 psi.

H1C were external all HX that I have seen across the years were internal

http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/turbo_faq.htm check it out 89-90 H1C waste at 22psi, the boost can be turned up with a banks bighead boost fooler, which replaces the stock wastegate actuator.

Wastegate is listed as an option.

I stand corrected, my good man. Hats off to you. But I still am trying to play around with compressor maps, to determine the right hairdryer for what I am doing,
