Post subject:  Car won't start

I rebuilt the motor last spring and have had zero problems with it. On Saturday I went to the recycling place and when I went to leave, it wouldn't start. Once it cooled down it fired right up. It fires right up in the morning, but once it's warmed up nothing. It's getting fuel, but not spark. I tried a new coil and it still does the same. Could it be the points or condenser? This is the first car I've ever owned that didn't have electronic ignition so I don't know much about a points ignition. Please help.

Interesting. How old are the points and condenser? Have you ever changed them?

Post subject:  Same points

They are the same ones that were in there when I got the car. Like I said, I don't know much about points. I've never adjusted them, and not sure how. I have a service manual, but it happened so quicly, I wasn't sure if the points or condenser going bad could happen suddenly like that.

Well, points are near-perfect for about five minutes of engine runtime after they've been installed, and from there they begin to degrade. Sooner or later the degradation causes problems. It's not sudden, it's gradual; it only seems sudden because the deterioration's not bad enough to cause the engine to run poorly or fail to start...until it is.

How do you want to proceed? Put in new points and condenser? Or change to electronic ignition?

I'll stick with the points and condenser for now. Still trying to find some money to replace the rear window I broke trying to take out to do rust repair. The points are pretty cheap aren't they? I just don't know how to adjust them once they're changed.

Once you change the points in a slant, you'll go electronic. If you want to keep the points, its actually easier to remove the distributer to do this. Remove the distributer, watching where the rotor turns while you remove it (this is critical, as you need to make sure it points to the same spot when you reinstall it, so it rotates to where it was when you removed it). It will be easier if you rotate the engine so the rotor points to the number one wire on the distributer cap. When you remove the dist., the rotor will rotate counter-clockwise to point toward the front of the engine. Remove the old points and install new points and condenser. Gap to .019" with one of the cams on the rubbing block of the points. Make sure you put the supplied lubricant on the cam and the rubbing block. Reinstall the distributer like I described above. Hook up a dwell meter to make sure its within spec (42-46 degrees?). It makes a big difference on timing. Sound like fun? It isn't. Trust us, go electronic, whether its the stock Chrysler set up or HEI. Its a 45 minute job. And you'll never have to replace points again! Ask us how, we'll walk you through it! Dan is dead on: as soon as you start the engine, the points start going down hill, and your timing will change gradually over time, causing poor running and starting.

Disclaimer: Its been years since I've changed points, so if any correction is needed please feel free to correct me!

If your distributor is in good shape (other than the points) an easy solution is a Pertronix Ignition.........
