Post subject:  Cams and Compression?

This winter i am pulling my head to shave another .060 off it to get to .100 off. I am trying to figure out which cam would match the comp, 9.5-1 i think? I looked at the 510 from earson but i'm not at 10-1. What would be the largest cam i can go with and run well, I would like it to pull well over 5k.

My 10:1 engine plan used the Oregon Cam Grinding 791. It's single pattern as the plan included nitrous.

The cams Oregon offers are in this thread... http://slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php ... m+grinding

You are going to use a high stall torque converter right? If you aren't going to use nitrous and will go for a torque converter that stalls over 2400 RPM I like the Oregon grind 346. It's 234/228 @ .050" lift 262/252 advertised and .476/.479" lift. $70 plus shipping last I checked.

I have the 3000 stall, plan on using nitrous at some point. I want to push the limit on this engine without pulling the bottomend apart! If that cam is on the upper limit well the price is certainly right. Thanks Josh

To run the 791 like I have (which is what I'd do for nitrous use) or the 346 you'll need to shorten the tops of the valve guides so the retainers don't hit and upgrade the valve springs. I'm using the 340 type single spring with damper and chrome moly retainers. To run the higher RPM I plan on shimming the oil pump relief for about 60 psi and will run ARP rod bolts.

I have alot of machine work done to the head and can run a 520 lift cam, i just don't want to over cam the engine and ruin my progress. I also run(shame on me for this) chevey 350 springs on the head..
I have shimed the oil pump but need to put the mechanical gauge on to make sure its right.

I run the Erson 280/270 with 9.5 CR. I also have larger valves and a 5 speed/3.55 gears. This makes a very torquee, streetable combination.

I arrived at this setup paying close attention to dynamic compression ratio numbers.

Wicked,

The cam Josh suggests (Oregon 346) should work very well with 9.5:1. You could even go a bit bigger on the cam with a 3000 stall, but not necessary. Well tuned, that setup should pull well past 5000.

Sandy's cam would also work well, but will give less top end and more bottom. I had almost Sandy's cam run very well (14.90s) in my Valiant (lightwt) with a 2800 stall and 8.8:1 comp.

Ignition advance curve and carburetion will also make a big difference, of course.

How fast do you want to go, how fast have you gone, and how much does your car weigh?

Thanks for all the input guys. The cam Josh sugested is on my list of to buy stuff.

I would like to see 14's, i have gone 16.89, the car is 3450 with me in it. I will be running 4.10's in the rear, the tranny has the 998 internals.

I would say you have some tuning to do (and/or better headwork). With that hardware, you should be in the low 16s or high 15s.

My daily driver '68 Dart is running 16.40s with a best of 16.36 @83. It has a stock cam, but nice head from Mike Jeffrey and good induction/exh. Only 2200 stall conv and 8.8:1 comp on 87 octane. It weighs 3350 on the starting line (OD auto adds wt).

The headwork makes a big difference. What's done to your head?

The head just has over size valves 170 144. It's not ported to much just cleaned up a bit, I am planning to send the head to Mike for some work. The tranny also needs some adjustments wich may be holding it back,I guess what i'm saying is i have alot of work to do this winter, i may not be where i should be with the car but i'll get there soon enuff.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Sending the head to Mike is about the best thing you can do, IMHO.
