Does anyone know of an adjustable voltage regulator that will work with a Mopar dual field wire alternator? Prefer one with the Mopar plug, but don't mind rewireing if necessary.

I have seen dual-field regulators with a small trimpot on the back, protruding through the potting compound.

Unfortunately, I can't remember who made 'em, but I'll put in a couple of phone calls.

Update: Found it. Transpo #C8313, should be obtainable via any good local auto electrical house or you can order it online at Weitzel's or here.

My man, Dan comes through, again. I have one coming from Weitzels. Nice to talk to. Has to order it, but he does take paypal. $24.80 shipped.
Reason for needing is overcharging at 15.xx volts. Cannot find any problems with wiring, and have tried several different brand regulars. I am using the high amp Nippendenso alternator.
Thanks Dan.

Are you certain the alternator is good? Not an internally shorted field?

I used a nippondenso alternator (off an intrepid or something similar?) previously with a stock napa replacement regulator and it was mid 14s cold, 13ish warm, following the temperature compensation of the regulator. Never reached 15.

alternator seems good, if I unplug the regulator it stops charging. As an expeiriment (while waiting for the new reg) I am going to install a variable resistor in the field circuit between the alt and the reg, to limit the field current, and see what that does.

Don't the Optima spiral core batteries perfer a slitely higher voltage? Maybe install one of those. However I am also using the Nipenz alt. and I am charging around 14.5 ish or a pinch higher. Pretty sure I havn't seen 15 volts though. I am using a voltage regulator speced for a '74. (VR-???)

Pics of Regulator (sort of)

Nope...and even if they did, high line voltage makes other problems (rapid bulb burnouts all over the car, for example).

I have gone through several regulators using the stock alt. My car goes through them things like you wouldn't believe! Thank goodness for lifetime warranties...

The last one I had was giving full power to the battery!

Usually it's inferior, off-brand parts that are sold with a "lifetime warranty" by junk shops like Autozone, Checker, Schuck's, Kragen, etc. It means you get to spend your lifetime replacing shoddy parts under warranty. Better to buy a quality regulator (Standard-BlueStreak, Echlin, or Transpo) and only have to buy it once.

Thats exactly what it is (except its O'Reillys) and thats exactly what I need to do, when my current VR goes out in a few weeks...

so is the transpo parts decent? - dan i would imagine you wouldnt mention this brand unless they were of some reputable quality? - i see on their site they make a lot of different electrical system components - the price certainly seems good - oo3

Bringing back an old topic. I also had the same problem Charrlie had...over charging with a known good alternator, good wiring, new Interstate battery. I was running at 15.6 volts at idle. The other day when my ignition control box went out, it was putting out 16.2! Later the next day, I tested it again with the same results. So I tried another alternator with the same results. I installed a Transpro adjustable regulator I had ordered early last week (I've known I had a problem for a month or so) and got voltage down to a 14.6 volts, no matter what rpm or load is put on the system. I also replaced the crimped ends and ring connecters of the 10g wires that attach to the alternator stud, as they where exposed on one. One thing I don't like though, is the Transpro box had a made in China sticker on it, so I guess another one bites the dust. Anyway, just wanted to share my experience with this unit.

I got my Transpo adjustable VR last week, and tried it. Even at the lowest setting, was charging too high (approx 15 V). I didn't do any more with it. I don't have time to work on it right now. I have a 64 Valiant that I have to finish, before the customer, comes after me with a shotgun :) . After I get done with that, I plan on spending a few days on my cars.

14.6 is still too high, and 15 is way too high. I'm goin' back to my original diagnosis: there is something the matter with the regulator's wiring. High resistance upstream of the regulator and/or floating grounds, probably.
