There have been some who have tried to run them with success. General consensus is that they are not worth the added expense/trouble. |

I have read they are a must for high boost turbo apps. |

630 HP @20 psi with a 0.460" Crane flat tappet cam (Tilley) says otherwise. Don't waste your money/time. My guess is you would gain 5-10 HP over a good flat tappet for over $1000 invested, IF you guess the right profile. You make the call. Lou |

Tend to think the same - WAY to expensive but why would one use them? |

Roller cams are for high RPM race engines that need a lot of open valve time. A roller lifter can climb a steeper cam lobe so you can get more time at full valve lift. DD |

Thx doc - was looking at a cam the other day and I could not figure out HOW a lifter could follow the profile - very wide lobe radius - and nearly parallel sides - roller cam |

All the key points have been hit. The material needed for the cam blank is $$$, you have to devise a system that won't allow any 'wobble' of the cam (which means some kind of thrust bearings/plates from the rear and front...not something the timing cover with a cam stop is going to accomplish well). Most profiles you are looking at a lift of .600+ with stock rockers. For the $$$ it's spendy...there are uses for it (blown applications take advantage of the radical open/shut valve action from the cam profile...) So far the Cox Brothers were the only one's offer blanks at one time (thanks for bringing one for show and tell doc), for a short time Schneider Cams and another company had some vintage 'saddle' style roller lifter blanks (if the cam moved .001 the 'ears' on the saddle lifter would spell the end you valve train)... I researched this a while back and it would only be worth it if you were making a $5000 slant engine for race... -D.Idiot |
