Post subject:  Slant 6 Year Identification

The Slant 6 in my 72 Swinger has been swapped from the original 198 to a later year 225.

Are there any definitive markings I can look for to tell me EXACTLY what year the engine is in my Swinger?

Where are some identifying numbers located on the block and cylinder head.

What are some numbers I might find and how do they decode?

The reason I know the engine has been swapped,is because the carb is a 1945 series instead of the 1920 Holley, and there "were" emissions items(Ive removed them as we are emmissions exempt) on the engine that could only be found on a later engine.

there is a serial number pad that juts out right at the front passenger side corner of the engine, behind the alternator bracket. the serial number is stamped into that pad, on the same surface as the head gasket seats. remove the alt bracket and clean that area, and post the numbers you find stamped there.

Post subject:  Numbers found

Took a little bit of time but I finally got all the clutter moved and cleaned the pad with a wire brush. Numbers i found are as follows:

7225R 2 14 E (MALTESE CROSS)

So what I get so far is its a 225 engine, and it has either undersized or oversized(cant remember) main bearings from the factory according to the Maltese cross.

So what do the other numbers mean?

Maltese Cross Department Per Factory Manual:

Maltese Cross stamped on the engine numbering pad on right side of block, on top boss directly behind coil indicates that engine is equipped with a crankshaft which had one or more connecting rods and/ or main bearing journals finished .001 inch undersized. The position of the undersize journal or journals is stamped on the center counterweight of the crankshaft.

A Maltese Cross with an X indicates that all connecting rods and/ or main bearing journals are .001 inch undersize.

Connecting rod journals will be identified by the letter "R" and main bearing journals by the letter "ME". For example "M1" indicates that No. 1 main bearing is .001 inch undersize.

what would be the reasoning behind the connecting rods and/ or main bearing journals finished .001 inch undersized?

Crank wouldn't polish to spec without undersize grind, factory didn't want to waste the crank.
