Hi all - just cracked the base of a rebuilt 1920 putting it on. Not enough finesse for an old carb, I guess... this replaces the old one, which (wow) has a crack at the base too. Is this common with these carbs?

Of course, this parks the 69 Dart I just got on the road until I can find a good used 1920 or two. Grumble, grumble.

I'd go reman but I don't trust them and don't have the $200 it'd cost without a decent core. Words of wisdom? Ok, how 'bout (heh, heh) donor/cheap rebuildable carbs so I can get good at rebuilding them myself AND get this car back in service??? :D

I'd promise to pass 'em along to other slanters in need...

It's not too common, no. The casting quality is pretty good. But we're talking about old castings that've been through a lot of thermal cycling and probably several instances of abuse at the hands of "remanufacturers".

One way or another, you will have to spend money on this. Either you'll spend good money to buy a new carburetor, or you'll spend good money to buy a good core and then spend again to have it refurbished (tossing a kit in a carb this old won't get the job done; there's hard-part wear), or you'll spend bad money on a "remanufactured" piece of trash.

I've got new carburetors, and I've got recommendations for refurbishing shops, and I've got a good core or two, and I might have a good almost-new carb; send me a PM if you like.
