Can someone give me some information on how to advance the cam degree and what that translates to exactly. I was first under the impression that is increased your LSA, so 110 was no longer the max per say. Next, I thought that the slant six was done differenlty than a v8 or different key ways. Thanks for your help, I believe I purchased an RV cam and would like to put 2 deg advance to see if it could help the top end ie 5000rpm. I know that with the 290 .509 110 small block cams 2 degrees would really rock.

The lobe separation or LDA (lobe displacement angle) is an angular measurement between the intake and exhaust lobes, is ground into the cam and cannot be changed without regrinding. Engines with separate cams for the intake and exhaust can change the LDA as changing one cam's relationship to the crank can be changed without affecting the other cam. Generally speaking advancing the cam in relation to the crank improves low speed performance. Too much advance will hurt though. Retarding the cam most often only hurts performance. If you have a lack of high speed torque that is due to cam selection it is usually a lack of duration. Of course the cam is only part of the larges engine system. Knowing what you have (where you are) would be a large help in guiding you to a destination.

Advancing the cam is nothing more than turning it in the normal direction of rotation in relation to the crankshaft.
