Post subject:  67 Slant Head

I will be driving my slant daily. Its a 67 Dart 225. How important is it that I install hardened exhaust seats? Should I just buy another head to swap on?

Also,is there any way to swap to the later 71+ cam with the engine still in the car?

Depends on the car. Doc has done a pretty spiffy job of in car cam swaps on the older model A-bodies (see the article "In Car Cam Swap" by Doc in the articles section of this site). In most cases, you will need to unbolt the motor mounts, raise the engine so that the "X" on the timing cover clears the lower rad support/bumper, then remove radiator and grille. It may be possible then to do so... again, this is subject to the car you have. I am not 100% sure on your car, but I am sure someone else here can tell you straight up whether its really "possible".

Far as the head goes, if the engine runs well, you CAN leave as is, and just run it till they don't quite seal right anymore. At that point, you can yank it, and run a newer head, or have hardened seats installed (also a good time for O/S valves and porting... ). If it helps you sleep better though, you can just get a later head, and slap it on there... you just never know what the shape of the head is in, unless you take it apart, and if you do that, you may as well just have the machine work done, and be done with it.

Good luck!

You needn't touch the head just to run unleaded; see this post. Run it til you actually need headwork, meanwhile saving up and building up at your leisure.

You might be able to swap in the later cam without removing the engine, but...why? If your present cam isn't damaged in some way, you won't get a benefit anywhere near proportional to the effort and time required.

I just figured if I find a later slant to rob the head from why not take the cam? I have had a few people suggest the 71+ cam. Im happy with the car as is,Im just the kinda guy that if I am going to do something,I want to do it once, and do it right.Thank you guys for the replies :D

The difference between the '65-'70 and '71-'80 cam is really too small to be worth the swap effort, assuming the existing cam's in good shape. If you're itching to take off the timing cover, spend your money, time, and effort putting in a nice non-slack timing chain and sprocket set, and degreeing-in the cam you have now.

With the engine at 81,000 orignal I think the cam is fine. The car fires righ up,and drive down the road like a 67 Dart should(amazing!)Which timing set do you reccomend, and how do I degree my cam?

Dan- I really appriciate you giving me your time to answer all my questions! You are my slant six yoda! :D
