Post subject:  paint vs clear coat

I'm trying to figure out if I can clear coat my timing chain cover and water pump on my 62. Would the front of the motor get hot enough to take off the clear or should I just go with high heat paint?? It's not a big issue, I'm just trying to keep the whole motor from being really really red.
I was going to paint the block gray but the red paint on the distributor side is still good so I guess I'll stick with that. The intake/exhaust manifolds are red as is the valve cover. So far it's really really red. I guess I'm getting old, I didn't want any chrome or aluminum. (Sorry, I can't even say that other word for aluminum).
Any ideas??
Thanks.
Joe

This is all a matter of personal taste, but I'm having a little trouble understanding the apparent contradiction between wanting the original 1962 paint codes so you can get the exterior to look exactly, precisely correct…

…and trying to come up with a nonstandard underhood paint arrangement.

Again, it's a matter of personal taste (and they do make high-heat clear coats if that's what you really want to do)...but what means "too red"? In stock configuration, you've got the black air cleaner, the black water pump pulley and fan, the black alternator brackets, and the black engine mount and transmission brace brackets to balance things out.

On the Australian "Pacer" (high performance) Valiants, they really went wild under the hood...yellow air cleaner, blue valve cover, orange block, etc.

Dan, you did it to me again. Made me stop and think about what direction I'm going in. Thank you. I'm going to go out and look at it again.

I would LOVE to see a picture of that!

Dan, You're right again. I was looking at an engine bay with all the black stuff off (except motor mounts) and it looked like it was going to be mainly red. OK, it is but once the black stuff is back in it should be a good contrast. The only thing I did wrong is paint the exhaust manifold.
Maybe I should get an interior decorator involved. Curtains over there and a touch of pasley there... Maybe not. I look at the Chrysler Red as really really red.It could be worse if it was Dayglo, maybe mirrors under the hood. OK, I'll shut up.
Thanks again.
Joe
