Post subject:  Noise from PS Pump

When it gets really cold here, My power steering pump makes this really loud (and I mean loud) whining noise untill its warm. Is this normal, or is there something wrong?

yes, something is wrong. your oil level may be low, it may be too thick, or the inlet hose may have a crack in it allowing air to enter.

check the oil level, if full replace it, check for aeration of the oil, squirt oil on the outside of the inlet hose along its entire length including the ends while cold and see if the noise goes away. if not, the pump may be bypassing excessively when cold.

Well, It does tend to get low often because of a big leak, but I just put more fluid in it. It does have quite a bit of stop leak in it, I will put some regular fluid in it. Both hoses have been recently replaced.

So, what would that mean?
