Post subject:  Carter bbd carb
I installed a Carter BBd carb nos 1979 on my 1973 slant yesterday, the motor will only run when the choke is closed and at 3000 to 4000 rpm. no idle. I will be going back to the single barrel that was working Great! The day was not a total lose I did replace the cracked exhaust manifold. I am back in the market for a 2 bbl or maybe even a 4 bbl and intake . Have a Great day and keep on Hot Roddin'

Sounds like you have a big air leak somewhere. Rather than take a step backwards and reinstall a one barrel carb, why not get the BBD working properly?

I agree Reed, but I am a little bit pressed for time I am taking the truck to the paint shop tomorrow so it was easier to pull the 2 bbl and reinstall the single than to troubleshoot the 2bbl. when I get the truck back I will take another shot at the carter 2bbl. I just wish there was an easier way to swap the carbs besides changing the manifolds. oh well back to the garage!

jeez if youve got time to change the manifolds youve got the time to diagnose a vacuum leak...

I agree it sounds CRAZY!! But I could not keep the motor running Me in the drivers seat and check for vacuum leaks on the carb. Manifold change only took about an hour so it wasn't to bad the owner of the paint shop was injured in an accident this weekend I found out after the swap. I will reinstall the 2bb tomorrowow and see what happens. Have a Great New Year!!

I've been going through carb hell w/ BBDs also. I sold all my good ones like a dummy :( and have been trying to piece together a good one from several cores. What I've found is, they all seemed to be remans/rebuilds, and I believe they had wrong gaskets and/or base plates installed. I've also found that there are at least 3 or 4 different base plates and gaskets for them them. They all acted about the same as yours, w/o choking it you could pump the gas and turn it over and it would fire, but not idle. If you keep revving it or hold it around 3-k it would stay running, but any constant throttle and it would die like it was running out of fuel.

So I guess what I'm saying is, your "NOS" carb may not be so NOS. It could be a reman, one of mine was actually assembled w/ the boosters installed upside down!? I think I may have finally got a good one put together tonight, gonna try it tomorrow hopefully. The Stromberg I have on it now works decent but is too rich (it's off a '67 D200 w/ the red 210hp 318).

If the carb you bought was NOS then it is a sure bet you have a leak somewhere else.

You could have checked for vacuum leaks without the thing even running. Just spray soapy water on the sides of the carb and the manifold runners and then blow some air through the hose that connects to the pcv valve. It should bubble where you have leaks. If its a throttle shaft leak then that takes time and money. If its just a gasket leak then that takes very little time and very little money.

At this point I am not so sure what I bought was indeed as advertising NOS! I will take another shot at the Carter BBd install then probably add it to the pile of carb bodies I seem to be collecting.

It might be full of mud wasps,I,ve had carbs that looked great on the outside,and were plugged solid inside.

Years ago I had a Carter BBD instantly change from purring to barely running, but on a very careful teardown I couldn't see anything wrong at all; later, I was told that they sometimes crack inside where you just can't see it. Another rebuilt BBD solved the problem.

Keep an eye on ebay. There is a seller nixxon108 that comes up with NOS carbs every once and a while.
I have bought a NOS 2bbl Holley and a new NOS Carter BBS from him already.
