I have elected to add headers (instead of Dutra Duals) to my 80 Volare when I do the super six conversion. Thanks to this board I am almost all set up. I have an OEM aluminum 2 bbl intake with the provision for the EGR valve. I will run an electric choke and was planning to water heat the base of the intake. I noticed that the EGR passages are open to the bottom of the intake where I would mount the plate for the water heating setup. I also know that there is an EGR block off plate available. It seems to me that I somehow have to block off this passageway. Could I just mount the EGR valve and leave it locked in the "closed" position? This wont resolve the water heating issue but I can address if and when I have problems. Possibly I can heat the base of the intake with hot air off the headers rather than water. Thanks in advance. All ou haveto do is (a) leave the EGTR in place and just don't connect vacuum to it, or (b) remove said EGR valve and put a flat piece of metal over the hole. That will block the passages. However, you may have a crack or hole in the manifold, which an EGR blockoff plate won't cure. |

you can just flip the egr upside down for the time being, this will block the port. Dietz |

That flip-the-valve trick works fine when all you have to seal is exhaust, but I'm not sure I'd necessarily trust it in this case when we have to seal coolant. I'm not saying it necessarily would make a problem, but it might. Seems to me the better deal (if for whatever reason Dutra Duals are still out of the question because you gotta-just-gotta-just-gotta have tube headers) is to weld or otherwise seal the exhaust intake passage on the underside of the intake manifold. |

Actually, you can leave the EGR in place and don't even have to flip it. The EGR is an ON-OFF switch, so if it is closed, it is closed. As long as no vacuum is applied to the diaphragm, it should stay closed. |

Thanks for the feedback. As far as the Dutra Duals I need-to-gotta-have the tube headers. I am 45 years old and never had tube headers on any of my cars. This is my chance to relive the past with my son's car. He an I will experience together whether I was right for avoiding headers all these years. LOL I still have the problem of sealing out the water but maybe I can get a local guy to TI weld the hole into closed for me, or just skip the water heating of the manifold and see how it runs without it. I have something similar to those products that I got at a swap meet. Im not sure I trust something like that in the intake tract. Scott |
