Post subject:  bog and miss

hello all. i have a miss at idle, my carter bbd is brand new not remanufactured.choke is dissconected. it seems to work great, ive always had a slight miss, but it just started to bog down when i accelrate. Cap, rotor, plugs, and plug wires are new as of yesterday. i hooked it up to a performance machine at school and it showed my spark power to the plugs was low because my insualtion on my old old old wires was gone.(thats why i replaced the wires and such.) coil is about a week or two old and works great. timing is set at about 15 btdc initial.could it be the advance causing the bog? im going to recheck timing and advance in class today and double check my spark problom. i belive the bog has to do with my timing advance but any input would be great!! :D

thanks guys!!

my bog on my BBD was caused by low voltage at the coil. I was getting 3 volts to the coil and after pulling a new wire from the bvallast resister to the coil all was well. I firmly believe in the old wire, cracked, dry, whatever is a problem on these cars.

Bog on acceleration could be overadvancing timing, a vacuum leak, or fuel delivery problems. Have you double checked that the metering rods are adjusted correctly? 15 BTDC is pretty aggressive for a stock slant distributor. Have recurved it? Have you made sure you are getting a healthy shot of gas when you open the throttle? If the choke is disconnected, have you made sure it isn't flapping shut when you step on the gas?

gets plenty of gas. im going to put it back at 13 btc and see what it does, if nothing ill check the wire from the ballast resistor to the coil.

thanks!

Have you checked to make sure the vacuum advance isn't blown, is hooked up correctly (to the correct port on the carb) with a hose in good condition? What exact BBD (Carter number) did you install, and what application info do you have on it? It may be equipped with a manually-switchable altitude compensator, which may be in the wrong position for your elevation above sea level, if any. Here is the Carter BBD operation and repair manual (pdf)

ok checked the vacuum advance pod and it holds pressure, replaced the hose from the carb to dizzy, rechecked timing and there is no advance(vacuum at idle) it does advance under throttle. should it or should it not have a lil bit of advance at idle? i DO have it on the right port. any other suggestions? i still have to check the ballast ressistor wire too, but it kinda got dark and has been snowing. my bog started to get a little bit better. but not the greatest. thanks alot of your help.

It should not have any vacuum advance at idle (unplugging and replugging the vacuum advance hose should not cause the timing mark to move as you watch under the timing light at idle). And, there should be no vacuum present at the vacuum advance port on the carburetor at idle.

No, those are casting numbers, not carburetor numbers. You say you bought it new, did it come in a Carter box with a Carter number?

(Your signature pic is way too big; it needs to be cut way down in size right away. I've sent you a PM with details. For now, I've stripped the signature from your posts.)
