| Post subject: | Remote Turbo Induction help.. |
Hey so i have a 70's block (i can only assume since it has emission control threads for removed parts and its painted blue) in my 64' Canada Chrysler Valiant (Dart fins :p) and i want to blow it up before i swap a period correct block under the hood. I came within an inch of bolting in my done-up 318 (318/340 hybrid) but there's no way i could do something as disgusting as that after being on this forum for about a year or so.. ANYWAYS, i'm looking at either a T-25, 14b, or possibly a GN turbo to remote mount on the exhaust tip (might have to relocate gas tank for this one). Reasons for this are the uniqueness factor, cooling effect, and affordability due to no out-sourced custom manifold work. The idea is to run the induction pipe right back up to the front into the engine compartment. Right now i've got a single barrel carb on the corresponding manifold, and havn't decided whether i want to get into building a junkyard blow through TBI system or if i should assemble a blow through carb system. I'm leaning towards the carb setup for various reasons.. the question here is what kind of carburetor can be purchased for under 200 dollars and easily tuned to handle 6-10psi bought from a local junkyard/E-tailer. EDIT: Okay so i figure the turbo will have to be mounted much closer to the engine than originally anticipated due to complications in oiling the turbo (12 combined feet of oil line scares me). Im going upgrade my exhaust to 2 1/4", then have a flange welded to a rather thick down pipe adjacent to the starter (which will most likely need the solonoid relocated or shielded). I foresee some battery relocation and fender modifications.. After 8 hours of hand sanding :p ![]() After paint job with era-correct equipment on the 50th anniversary Car club of Canada tour through British Columbia |

Why not run an electric oil pump with its own cooler and resovior? Frank |

I had trouble finding space to mount my fuel pumps and a surge tank under my '66 Dart; a rear mount turbo would be a royal pain. Instead, I had a shop fab up a J-pipe off the stock manifold that puts the turbo where the battery used to be. You've got a lot of room for a turbo under the hood, and not very much under the car. Also, a 14b is likely to be too small, though a GN turbo would be just about perfect. |

Ah an external oil resovior would work, but this J pipe sounds kinda like my 2nd idea. So Matt, how how thick (and what angle) did this pipe have to be to hold your turbo? I was under the impression that it was wise to have more than just the pipe holding the housing. This would be easier to route to a pressure box and just look plain NASTY. I'm thinking once this 225 is done through (if.. :p) i'll build a 170 screamer with oversized valves to use the turbo setup once i experiment on my 225. Is there any other names for the Buick v6 turbo other than 'GN'? I'm selling my fiero to fund this project so now i can look into aftermarket turbos.. I'm interested in a Garret GT series turbo with water injection to be safe. Something i've been wanting to try is tuning with their new turbo RPM sensor. |

Me too, I'm going to be fabricating a bracket to hold up the turbo. There's a flex coupler in the J pipe so it won't support any of the turbo's weight, to avoid thermal stress issues. The Buick Turbo V6 also showed up in the Regal T-Type. You might also want to consider an '80s era Supra or 300ZX turbo. Or an HX35 or HX40 off a newer diesel. I'm installing a Garrett GT4082, but this is likely to be overkill; a GT35 would probably give better spool times. |
