| Post subject: | East races + Kearney: tentative + confirmed dates |
Fellow Slanters, Our banquet in Gatlinburg, TN was a huge success, giving us a good outlook for the 2009 race season. We decided to pursue 6 races in the East, with an additional Midwest race in Kearney, NE. Here's the skinny. Norm Foster has secured sponsorship from Southern Chemical and Textiles (SCT) for 3 races again this year. This will be between $600/race to $1000/race! Some of this money may go to end-of-year points champs in the East. A banquet report will also be up under "Events" soon. Please let me know which races you can/might attend, and please contact race organizers if you need more info. 2009 East (+1) Tentative Race Schedule 1) Hagerstown, MD – May 30-31. CONFIRMED Rick Covalt, and longtime Slant Six enthusiast who has not come to a race yet, has stepped up to organize a race near him that would benefit racers from PA, MD, VA, DE and points north and south at Mason-Dixon Dragway in Hagerstown, MD. This track is near the intersection of Interstates 70 and 81, about 1.5 hr west of Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD. This would replace our Pittsburgh race from the last few years. This is the weekend AFTER Memorial Day. Driving times are 5.5 hrs from Columbus, 6 hrs from Wilkesboro, 3hrs from Pittsburgh, 3hrs from Richmond, 3-6 hrs from CT, MA, NY, NJ, DE… 2) Knoxville, TN – June? Meril Bruner will find out about dates in June to host a race at Knoxville Dragway in Maynardville, TN. This track drew 18 cars last year and could maybe beat that this year with some new blood. Meril and Ella would host another cookout at their house before the race! SCT sponsorship would be behind this race purse. 3) N. Wilkesboro, NC – July 11. CONFIRMED Ron Hamby is hosting the ever-popular North Wilkesboro, NC race again this year, hopefully sponsored by Empire Chrysler. This race will be co-headlining with a Nostalgia Gearjammers race that day. The traditional car show will take place at Empire Chrysler starting around 9 AM on the west end of Wilkesboro on the main drag (US 421). 4) Bristol, TN – Sept 19-20. We do not have a race organizer this year yet for the Bristol Mopar Thunder event. The dates are up on the Bristol website as Sept 18-20, and our race would be on Sunday. There was interest in the banquet in trying for a 2-day race here. SCT sponsorship would be behind this race purse. 5) Clay City, KY – Oct 3-4? We do not have a race organizer this year yet for the Clay City Mountain Park Dragway Mopar event. The dates will probably be the same as the last few years, and our race would be on Saturday. There was interest at the banquet in making this a 2-day race. SCT sponsorship would most likely be behind this race purse. 6) Valdosta, GA – dates?? Charlie Schmid working on organizing a race in Valdosta, GA (near FL line) or another small track in that area. The original dates fell through with the Valdosta Mopar show, so we will check back with Charlie on this. SCT sponsorship would be behind this race purse. 7) Kearney, NE – Aug 15-16 CONFIRMED Mike Jeffrey and I (Lou Madsen) are planning a race for Kearney, NE (Mike’s home track). This would bring several racers from either end of the country, as well as several from the Midwest into a truly centrally located competition. Lou has had discussions with Mike about dates, and August 15-16 looks like the best one at this point. 3-5 racers from the East sounded likely to go, if the race happens and the world economy doesn’t collapse between now and then. It sounded like 3-5 racers could come from the West, and potentially 7-10 racers from the Midwest could come. It seems likely we could get 12-20 cars together! Thanks everyone, and give me your feedback! Lou |

Well it looks like I'll be in for 2 of these. The hagerstown race and the Knoxville race. That's if nothing else from work pops up on those weekends. I wanted to do the Kearney Race but it's too lat into august for me to make it that far Greg |

Thanks for the input, guys. Keep 'em coming! Sandy, after you come to Kearney you may as well stop by Virginia for a few days, eh? Dennis, Kearney will be great. Greg, those would be two sweet races to make. I'm working on Will Burns to bring out the 10 sec so-low Cuda and Sam Powell to bring the turbo 5spd Dart to Hagerstown. Hopefully we can get to 12-16 cars there. I hope to make all of these races, but some dates may get blocked out as time goes on. Lou |

Still hoping to get the Swinger in good enough shape to drive to Kearney by August. I'd just like to meet a lot of you folks in person, and provide you guys with another car to beat up on... |

Sounds great, Vince! Keep spinnin' those wrenches. Maybe there could be a caravan up from TX... We'd love to meet you too. I think you'll like the "Slanted Family" even better in person. This race will partly be gauging interest from "middle country" folks and help plan future events. Events in that region have been poorly attended in recent past, but there seem to be quite a few cars around. Lou |

Lou, The only race I can commit to at this time is Wilkesboro. Kearney and Bristol is a no-go with a maybe for Hagerstown. I won't find out about others until firm dates are posted. I am at the mercy of the seniority-based vacation picking schedule at work. Brian |

Brian, OK, hopefully Hagerstown can happen for you - closer than Clay City or Knoxville. You might want to get with Meril about the Knoxville date if you have a preference in June for that one. Great to see you, Anna, Nick, and Susan in Gatlinburg! Lou |

Quote: If there are any Texans, Sooners, Jayhawkers or 'Huskers going via the I-35 corridor maybe we can hook up and caravan.
Based on the condition the Swinger will likely be in by August, a convoy sounds like the safest way for me to make the trip... |
