Post subject:  How about we discuss quality air filters
Perhaps this might seem trivial, tell that to my 63GT. It absoutely dislikes Fram and STP air filters, period. They tend to foul within a month. I have my BBS tuned correctly, not too rich-not too lean, no driveabilty/hot-cold issues, excellent milage return.

Short of going into debt for K&N (which is not available for this set up to my knowledge) What do you folks reccomend and what to avoid.

He did flow bench testing on all major brands, including K&N.

Short answer is: on a street car run a Napa gold. K&N may help race cars, but is opverhyped for street use. Save your money.

If you don't want your air filter to foul, perhaps you should remove it completely. But in seriousness, the quickness of your air filter to foul is due to your driving conditions. If they didn't foul, the dirt would end up in your engine.

WIX (=NAPA Gold) or Purolator are good bets. K&N filters are good at only one thing: separating money from your wallet. Off-brands like STP and "value" brands like Fram aren't worth messing with.

No thanks; I'm keeping my car. See here (holy crap—an OEM AC filter passed only 0.4 grams of dust over the same test the K&N passed 7.0 grams! :shock:) and here ("After only 24 minutes the K&N had accumulated 221gms of dirt but passed 7.0gms. Compared to the AC, the K&N plugged up nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt") and here.

Just out of curiosity, do you live at the end of a long dirt road? I'd agree w/ the Wix / Napa filters by the way, I'm just wondering.

Since you inquired. I have a Chevron refinery a mile west of work which is also within two miles of the ocean. They have been digging up the Air Force Base for 6 years now, lotsa dust and particles in the air.


Yes I also have a private dirt road 1 1/4 miles of sand and gravel, but this is not my primary residence, i've not had the Dart out that way for several years now.

I run a pre-filter over mine which helps extend the life a little. At least it keeps out the bigger chunks. Lots of sand and hay, debris on the free way this year. Since Christmas I collected about a half a cup in the base.
I just order them once a year however, you can wash the pre-filter in the washing machine or by hand and run it through the dryer.

So you're in or near El Segundo (as am I), and I don't clog up filters in a month............

Do you have a stand-alone engine breather, or is a hose routed back to the air cleaner?

Howdy neighbor:

Stand alone, no hoses to the air cleaner on this beast. I had a brainstorm last night :idea: . I've encountered rebuilt carbs in which the gaskets were installed incorrectly restricting vacuum. To date, there's been no obvious performance issues to warrant tear down, if, as I suspect, a rich condition that displays no overt symptoms this could be the culprit ( I find this Dart extremely tollerable to rich conditions). Time to gasket match and invest in a quality filter.
