Just fiddling with the timing for the first time on a Slant 6. totally stock distributor from what I can tell. Am I correct that there is only about 3/8" of rotation on the Distributor?
I see a metal strap held down with a 3/8" bolt just to the right of the distributor when leaning over the fender. . that strap has a small slot in it. Is that all the adjustment I have without pulling the Dist and moving it a tooth?

There is also a bolt and slot on the under-side of the distributor, that slot is a little longer.
I have a 7/16 distributor wrench that will loosen the bottom bolt with-out pulling the distributor.

ahhhh, I actually think I have this wrench you speak of. I got it from a friend... he said it was for distributors but never needed it on anything. I gotta find that.

Thanks I would have never guessed there was this additional hardware.

Thanks

Just grabbed the wrench, Mine is 9/16 nuts.

Just fabricate your own. Take a 7/16 box end wrench, and bend a 90* angle on it. Option, weld an extension/"T" handle on it.

Or if you want to be all highfalutin about it (like me, heh) you can buy the correct slant-6 distributor wrench.

Post subject:  And option #3

One other option to be had on 1979+ slants (if you happen to find one in a junkyard). The don't use the slotted plate after that it's a collar that bolts on the dizzy and the 'holddown' is a 'claw' like the big block cars have... so all you have to do it loosen the hold down and twist away (until the vacc. adv pod runs into something....).

This is the same one I have except it's 9/16ths. I guess there is another setup that is hard to get to but in 9/16ths. Maybe I'll cut the end off and weld on the end of a cheezey 7/16 wrench.
I haven't used this dizzy wrench since I got it 20 years ago, I guess it's safe to cut up and modify. : )

9/16" distributor hold-down bolts are used on many engines (including Chevrolets) but not on slant-6s.

If you do this, the next car or truck you bring home will need the 9/16ths distributor wrench :D (Nice CJ5 and Chevy stepside by the way)
