Post subject:  RU4 Sorensen ballast and Standard Motor ECU ?

Hi All,

Yesterday I received a bunch of parts I ordered for my new 67 Dart. Included were a couple of RU4 Sorensen balast resistors and a Standard Motor LX101 ECU. I don't need to install either one, but I got them anyway b/c I always keep spares in the glovebox.

Anyhow, the ballast resistors have open backs. I have never seen this before. Then again I have never bought the Sorensen brand before. Is this inferior to the sealed units I am used to seeing?

And I asked the supplier where the ECU was made before purchasing. He told me it was made in the US. Well, when it arrived there was a bar code sticker on the box that reads Made in China. The actual ECU has a bunch of numbers on it followed by "Regitar USA" on it. Anyone know where these Standard Motor ECU's were actually built?

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,

I don't know where those were built but the open back resistors have been around for a long time. I would avoid using them because with a little moisture they corrode and break down much quicker compared to the sealed, potted resistors.

Example: If you have been running the car and the resistor is hot, and you open the hood when it's raining or if snow slides off on it I have seen them burn up on the spot or shortly afterward. Since then I have always stuck with the potted/sealed resistors.
