I am looking for a roof rack for our 65 dart. Does anyone have any ideas ? what works ? know of any roof racks on other dodge cars around that time frame that would fit ? So I would just add bike rails.. We would love to drag our old bikes around with us ! very open to ideas. thanks guys! |

Where are you? There's a wrecker here (in Nelson) that has a '65 Valiant wagon that I think has a roof rack. Nothing will happen until the snow melts though. |

There was a study not long back that showedthat roof racks really screw up aerodynamics - not that our cars are particularly streamlined to start with. Just saying ... With bikes on top, try to be careful about drive-throughs, too! I'd like to have a receiver hitch, and a bike rack that fit it. It wouldn't help the aero, but it should make loading the bikes easier. |

Ahhh, you're looking for a car topper, not a roof rack. |

what ever you call it .... for some reason vw people (me) have some obsession with strapping crap to the roofs of our cars. hahaha. really though we are big into bicycles . I might rip a ( car topper ) off an old jeep or something. I want it to be as functional and as period as possible. I am sorry to have created this annoying thread. |

No worries. Only Beetle people are into roof racks. Microbus folks already have room for their junk. |

I used to drive my moms 63 bug allot, I can see why they like bicycles. I could have used one a few times that thing left me stranded. That, and a bicycle would have been just as warm in the winter I think its a 63, what was the last year w/ the fox on the castle emblem? that and clear turn signal lenses on the front. Any how good luck. Dietz |

If my sister ever decides to get rid of that '67 Bug in her garage, I'll make a play for it, and it may well wind up with a rack on top when I need the capacity. More than likely, though, I'll remove the rear seat and make a useable trunk there. No, I won't fill it up with speakers. |

Here's how we pack around our cycles in the Summer. It's a simple "U" shaped rack that's pretty easy to get on and off. Bikes are a '40 Elgin and '27 CCM.

As you can see, there is lots of room to move a rack such as mine in the upward position, keeping the wheels of the bikes at bumper level or higher. I have no clearance issues so run it as is. |
