 Post subject: EFI and Supercharging
PostPosted: Sun Mar 24, 2002 3:36 pm
There has been alot of discussion below about turbo's but not as much about the other form of forced induction, supercharging. This will be my summer project.
I've just purchased the entire induction system ( air box, tubes, throttle body, Eaton M90 supercharger, intercooler, bypass, etc) from a 1990 T-bird Supercoupe with the 3.8 L V6 and I'll be adapting it to my 'under the hood' world. I'll be adding EFI first along with a programable EMS ( investigating Simple Digital Systems <A HREF="http://www.sdsefi.com/index.html">http://www.sdsefi.com/index.html</A> which happens to be local). I've got a keen interest in what you are doing Bob with turbo/non-turbo chips. I'd also like to hear what others have done with supercharging . . . Roger, your name was mentioned below in Bob's post. What are you planning? How far along are you?

Al,
That sounds like a great project. I hope you'll keep us posted. There's a 3.8L supercharger tech forum on the turbo Buick site ( <A HREF="http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/">http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/</A> ) that might interest you and Roger.

Al, that's some ambitious project you've got in the works. I see a full-bore custom intake in your future, between the Eaton 'charger and the EFI.

My plans are pretty straightforward, as I'm looking at slightly increased static compression ratio, adding the GM efi system, (see Bob's conversion article), and when money gets available, throwing an axial supercharger, (Paxton,Vortec,Powerdyne), into the engine bay, and seeing if 10-12 pounds boost will push the crank into the pavement. ;)

At this time, I'm in a parts-gathering and research stage. I'll have to build a pressure-prepped engine first, and I have a few other conversions I'd like to get done to my old '68 Dart, but things are moving along, although a bit slowly. (You wouldn't happen to have a Paxton blower hidden in your back pocket, wouldya?)

I do have a dummy engine on the stand, and have been mocking up a few different arrangements as spare time allows. I'm attempting to use as much salvage yard parts as I can, even to the point of doing a cut/fit/braze job for a fuel rail.

From my perspective, the entire EFI string started as an economical way to retrofit a slant with an efi system, using almost entirely boneyard parts, (is my/our frugality showing?), and I'm really trying to follow that spirit of things. I will end up buying the MSD aluminum injector bosses and having them welded into an Offy intake, but I'm trying to keep that as the extent of "farmed-out" work.

Roger
