| Post subject: | oil pressure issue |
Hi all name is Mike. I just bought a 1970 dodge d100 and found this site through sweptline.org. Glad to see this site as it has helped me get my truck running better. Ok now the problem I just started having is when I get up to 50-55 mph the oil pressure drops below the quarter line on the guage, don't know how much lower it will go I didn't go any faster. If I let up on the gas it goes back up to over half where it normally runs. Anyone konw what the problem might be or at least where I should start? Thanks for your time. |

I would put a real pressure gauge in it and see what numbers its reading, mark |

Definitely put a real gauge in the line but the first place I would look is the oil pressure relief valve on the oil pump. Sludge and debris can make its operation sluggish and erratic. |

If this is true pressure behavior, it sounds like a plugged oil pick-up screen or dirty oil filter. DD |

I would have to agree here, or you might be a quart or 2 low. If oil's full then the above might be the case. If there's room in the crankcase, add a quart of Tranny fluid and drive it for about 100 miles and do a oil change and see what the results are.

ok so i went out and warmed my truck up to see what was going on cause last night she took forever to start. She warmed up fine no problems. I got in and hit the gas acouple of time and the oil pressure shot down low again but this time the temp gauge shot down too. I start thinking my gauges are just jacked but when I look under the hood the hose from the radiator to the block looks like a blown up balloon. |

I pulled the oil pan and took the screen off to clean it out. there was a bunch of splinterd hard plastic inside. I was thinking some kind of washer to hold the screen in???? |

Clean the plastic crumbs. Are they...black? Yellow? Light brown? Dark brown? |

Okeh, that'll be camshaft sprocket tooth chunks and/or bits of distributor drive pinion. Pull the distributor and verify the drive pinion's in one piece and still has all its teeth…then get set to put in a new timing chain and sprocket set. |
