I have a 1982 D150 shortbed with the lean burn system and dual pick-up distributor. If I do the HEI conversion[electronic dist. with vac.adv and hei module.]what will tell the lock-up converter to engage?Do I leave the lean burn system hooked up and just remove the ignition portions?Any suggestions are welcome.I have learned a lot reading this board.

The lockup is not electric or electronic on that truck - it's fully hydromechanical, controlled within the transmission, and will not be affected when you delete the Lean Burn system altogether (which is what you should do).

Is the same true for an '85 lockup 904? What are the 3 pins for at the trans electrical connector? 2 of the three I think are for park neutral an I thought the third was +12v to trip a solenoid to engage the lockup.

Hi, Bren. The center pin gets grounded in park and neutral, for the neutral safety. The two end pins get connected together for the backup lights in reverse. The connector can be put on either vay, it does not make a difference.

I don't think 85s had ele. lock-up but not 100% sure.Ele. lock-up had a single wire connector on the rear of the main case where the tailshaft housing mounted. It was on driver,s side above oil pan rail.I rebuilt a '87 that WAS ele. lock-up.

I've been told that high stall lockup converters don't last very long. Anybody have any knowledge in this area? I am having a 2600 stall lockup converter made. Just wondering how many years or miles I should expect to get out of it. I plan to drive the car about 8000 miles a year.

My 2300 stall LU 'verter in the '68 has about 40k miles on it so far. SMR brand, kevlar LU clutch. Motor between 180 and 220 HP during those miles, depending on mods used.

Best thing is never put into LU at mid/high throttle. That could burn up the LU clutch.

It's the lockup automatically engaged around 29 MPH? I guess feather off the throttle at that point?
