On the front of my BBD, there is a dark spot forming between the middle section and the top section. It smells like gas, and there is a spot between the two middle intakes on the manifold, that smells like gas. I guess its been pooling there. The carb is rebuilt, and seems to run fine. All screws are tight. I do hear a whistling noise at higher RPM, could that be a vac leak? Does anyone know what the cause might be? I will post pics tomm.

If it's coming from between the top and middle castings, it's warped castings. Go buy two carburetor kits, pick out the appropriate main body-to-airhorn gaskets from both, "paint" them with engine oil to swell them a little, then install both of them one atop the other. This double gasket will usually stop most minor leaks without your having to brutalise the castings by putting them on a belt sander.

Sounds like a good tip, Dan. Are there any carb shops out there that can repair the castings properly, or are they best left alone?

get piece of 180 grit sand paper and place it on a piece of glass or some other flat surface. Using a circular motion level off the two matting surfaces until there is a nice flat surface. You must apply even pressure with your hand and not let it rock or you will make the problem worst. Did this to mine and no problem.

I have rebuilt 2 super6's in the last couple of weeks. A trip to the stationary sander is what I use.

One top had the ring around the hole for the metering rod piston raised. I had to not grind that part on the belt. I kept checking the fit. And grinded the edges.

Block off all the little holes in the carb with Vaseline to keep the crap from getting up in them.

Send the castings to me. I'll flatten them for you.
