Busted the gear on the distributor. Replaced it with another used dizzy. Did my first oil change since I bought the Dart. It has a stand pipe on the motor. I used a Pure PL30001 filter.

The rods rattle now on start up with the 15-40 Valvoline. I don't remember hearing that with the old oil and the Fram................(been a few months)

Think the teeth are causing problems?

Nope, there's not enough material in a distributor drive pinion to clog the oil pickup. Why using such a thick oil? Is the engine whipped/worn out?

Change to a Wix 51806 (NAPA Gold #1806) oil filter and 10w30 or 5w40 oil and the startup rattle should go away. For good measure, it will also be a good idea to service the oil pressure relief valve to make sure it's doing its job, as described in these two threads: thread 1, thread 2.

I have lots of the oil due to the Cummins. I run it in the truck. I run it in the van too. I went with thinner stuff in the van last change because of the cold weather clacking on start up.

The Dart is leaking from the rear seal, and the front. I just ran the valves and put a new gasket there. The rear bottom bolt was broken off by the previous owner  So I sealed the gasket on with 3M gorilla snot to the cover all the way around. I used Permatex Black Berry juice on the bottom half of the gasket to hopefully seal it 'til the next time.

Cheesy but I have no time for projects on this car. Just keep it dependable for a commuter. I need to do some front end work on the Dually. (upper ball joint came out!)

Anyways the car leaks oil still. It will go to the car wash on Sunday for an engine cleaning for less sloppy maintenance.

Post subject:  Thinner oil and Wix 1806 stand pipe filter

Rug_Trucker,

To bring SL6 Dan's point home for using thinner oil, he suggested I try 0-30W Mobil 1 with the 1806 filter. This is a fantastic combination. As soon as I can get my hand off the key it's running at 50 psi. No rattle or noisy valve train. It runs super quiet and gets a little better mileage to boot!

The engine in question leaks like a bear! No burning.

Well I think the pump has Shipped the bed. Now that I think about it it took a long time to get oil at the rockers when we were setting the lash.

When I started it to warm up today for the trip to work it wouldn't quit clattering. I shut it down and drove the van to work.

I am guessing that the pump can't be changed without pulling the engine?

Between the azzholz at work and car trouble I am about fried! I do have Mon & Tue off.

BTW no it doesn't have a gauge and the idiot light isn't working either. I need to clean the sender and see if it is leaking, pop a mechanical gauge on there.

That will be a day or 2.
