Post subject:  1B carb... missing hoses?

Hye, I'm new here. I am sortof new to the slantsix, my father had one years ago. anyways, I have a problem with my new (to me) 1983 D150. It appears to be missing hoses.... and it has disconnected hoses. I was wondering if any of you could tell me if this is normal or not. I tried to find a good picture of the engine as a reference, but no luck. The Carb was changed not too too long ago, i think he missed something.

BTW: this truck was bought in Canada.

The first I am worried about since it had a rubber cap on and seams to show signs of a fluid coming out.

The second one (lower) is also capped, is this normal?

Thanks alot ahead of time for the help.

The top is the float bowl vent and it to be connected to the charcoal canister. The other also connects to the charcoal canister and it the purge line.

And that's a Carter BBD two barrel carb, not a one barrel. If your truck no longer has a charcoal cannister, leave both uncapped.

The bottom fitting needs to be capped if it's not connected to the charcoal canister other wise you'll have a vacuum leak.

wow that was fast. I have the charcoal canister with a filtered hose zip tied to it. goes down the to the frame rail.

I guess this would explain it being "sluggish" lol.

Thanks Joshie and Reed, thats what I did. After seeing the residue I figured it shouldnt be capped. I'll see if the previous owner left me the right hoses.

Just to double check this is the charcoal canister right? Does it matter where I connect the hoses? and is there something critical missing here? Sorry if I sound kindof stupid in this matter, I turned carpenter a few years back and i seam to have forgotten everything about carburators.

thanks again

Doesn't look like any charcoal cannister I've seen. Then I'm not familiar with the D-150 and certainly not Canadian variants. On the cars, and on the bent 6 Dakota I used to own, the cannister is mounted on the passenger side of the radiator support. The fittings are located on top of the cannister and each is marked as to which hose connects to it.

Maybe my eyes are going bad, but what looks like corrosion on the intake makes me think the intake is aluminum. Any body else? Was 83 a bad year for Mopar /6 AL intakes? I recall reading that some of the early AL manifolds were prone to leaking. Hammer, if you want to find out if it's AL or not, put a magnet up to it. No stick, it's AL.

According to the sticker on the driver's side of the engien compartment, it is the charcoal canister. I firgured out what goes where, I just need to find the hoses. I definetly see an improvement in the performance of the engien since unblocking the bowl vent. And it seams to handle better now that i have 235's in the back instead of 195's.

I jut checked the intake man. and it is Al, the magnet did not stick, it did stick to everything else. I suppose the truck /6's are different then the cars.... and USA/Can are also different because of the emissions control .

Hammer,

Can you take a picture and post it from the drivers side facing the carb linkage? Since the intake is aluminum clean it up and at least spray it with some LPS 3 to keep it from getting any pin holes.
