| Post subject: | 170 Or 225??? |
This is my first encounter w/ a slant 6 - pulled the motor from a 65 valiant for my 63 dart - there's no engine stamping on the boss on the passenger side of the block - am i looking in the right place? (the boss under the altenator mount bracket is where i read that the stamp number should be, but i don't see anything) the casting number on the side of the block doesn't seem to match up w/ any of the online info and i want to know what size engine i have. is there any other way or any other clues to know what i have? |

Look at the water pump by-pass hose. If it is short about an inch, its a 170. If it is long, about 2-1/2 inches its a 225. |

This is the pad where engine ID was stamped: ![]() If the block has been milled, the numbers may not be there. Here's the hose in question. This one is a 225.

That is the most common location for the engine ID stamping, but not the only one. Check carefully below the rearmost spark plug, too, and behind the water pump.Quote: the casting number on the side of the block doesn't seem to match up w/ any of the online info
What is the casting number on your block? How many freeze plugs are on the manifold side of the block?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH- your info was spot on. iwas looking at the side of that boss, not on top.(i didnt think there was enough room on top for any punchstamped numbers could be read). i,m a little disappointed now too, cause it,s a 170. oh well, i dont think the mrs,s is really going to know the difference any way. it,l still do plenty of wagging though! thanks again |

The 170 is still a Slant - and that's good enough! |

I like the 170. I have a '64 Valiant 4 door with a dealer-installed Airtemp AC unit. Even with the extra weight and drag, it runs just fine. |

170 motors set up right sing right along! One of the prettiest sounding cars that was with us in Woodburn was a mildly built up 170 in a wagon. Modified rear Dutra Duals and a single exhaust. It sounded awesome! Some of the racers prefer the 170. It can handle higher RPM's. Wayne Erickson has a "170" in his drag car that puts many a 225 to shame. There's nothing wrong with the low deck slant. I've got one I'm hoping to build someday soon for my next project. CJ |

I would read this before being to concern about the 170 being a slow poke. http://www.allpar.com/corporate/bios/ha ... rview.html I bought a 170 from Josh a little while ago, and I think it's going to be a lot better contender than my 225. Of course it's getting full roller valvetrain and a supercharger, but some other things come into play as well. The lower blocks are suppose to be more stable and I'm hoping for hockey pucks as pistons and a good rod ratio as well. |
