my '83 225ci 4spd OD stalls a lot when it rains. Being a new owner, I thought I'd ask you guys before doing anything. when stoped on neutral it would just turn off. I Think it might have to do with the humidity, but I am not sure... Is this normal, is it a common problem with these? thanks Hammer EDIT: its a Carter 2bbl BBD carb on aluminum intake. |

No it's not, hopefully it isn't electrical connections going bad and something simple like a float bowl full of water beads or a bad fuel filter. You can use CorrosionX on the electrical terminals and some gas dryer like "Heat" in the gas tank. Might check the distributor cap for condensation. |

check ECM make sure your not throwing any codes. If it only does it when it rains it sounds almost like your getting water in your carb. When the vehicle fails on you, grab an extra spark plug you have laying around and pull a wire off and see if you have spark. After confirming spark, open throttle and look down the throat of the carb. and confirm you have fuel. You need 3 things for an engine to run.. compression, spark, fuel. Make sure you have all three of these. If your missing one, then whatever one your missing is going to be the route to go down and determine why its missing. You already have compression so its going to be spark or fuel. Figure out what one your missing and get back to us! |

ok i'll start checking tomorrow since i just made it here. It drove ok on the highway. feels like a fuel related problem since it would gradualy die. I'll buy sparkplugs and check the throttle. I never thought i'd say this, I hope it rains again tomorrow  Hammer |

fuel filter?? Have you read the spark plugs? done a tune-up with quality parts lately? driving on sunshiney days is an option..(just teasin' ya  )

Not possible. Even if this is a lean burn engine, the computer does not have the capability of setting/storing/accesing codes. No Mopar slant six computer has this ability. The lean burn is a dumb computer.

ok well it stoped raining, but it's still wet. We are expecting more rain or snow later today so I can try it then. I checked the distributor cap and there is no corrosion on the inside, looks new, it was installed 180degrees off. so I reinstalled it right. seems to run better. also got new plugs, waiting for it to stall again. Hammer EDIT: Come to think about it, it stalled alot more when i was going uphill. Took about 5-7 startups and a heavy foot before doing my right turn at the stop sign. |

I would try new plug wires next, they may be bad. If you have just gotten this truck ,and have not driven it much,it may have nothing to do with the rain. It may just be a coincidence. Good Luck Dave |

I second this. When I got my dart, it had some weird, intermittent stalling issues. It wasn't until I opened the hood with the car running in the dark that I saw the light show of plug wires shorting to the block. Installed new wires and she ran much smoother.

If you haven't yet, I would change fuel filter , there may be something in the filter that blocks up the line at times. another thing would be maybe the float in the carb ,not sure what kind you have, but maybe it is causing it to flood with too much gas. When it cuts off , does it shut off like no current going to it, or like it sputters out , like maybe the rpms are way low . just some thoughts Dave |

Make sure the intake air preheat system is working. Its possible that you're experiencing carburetor icing.EDIT: its a Carter 2bbl BBD carb on aluminum intake. Ken

Another cheap and easy  test is to spray carb cleaner around the carb and intake manifold, especially the throttle linkage, to test for a vacuum leak.

I don't know anything about these trucks, but do they have the same type of fuel pick-up / sending unit in the tank as the cars? Is it possible that the filter sock (if it has one) is clogged up with gunk and starving the fuel system? |

Yes, and they are much easier to pull on a truck if your tank is behind the seat. If it sat for a long time with out "Stabil" it could be plugged with varnish. My son bought a pick up that did that..... |
