These are the pix of the tire. The shiny part in the center of the red circles is the exposed belt. In the second pic, you can see only the outside of the tire in that one particular spot is worn. There is a big bump there as well.

Don't have a picture but will in a few days. Front right, outside of the tire, along maybe only 8-10" of the circumference. The rest of it is fine. It's worn down to the wear markers. Not only that, but between the remaining thread, a small amount of rubber is withdrawn and the steel belt is showing. Along the same area, the middle and inside of the tire is fine, its just the outside. The bearings are fine, no detectable wobble to the tire by hand. The joints are in seemingly good condition. The torsion bars and LCA bushings may be faulty because I have a reoccuring ride height issue but thats a topic for another thread. Any idea what gives? I'm guessing defective tire. |

If it were an issue with the front end, would it be safe to assume that it would happen along the entire circumference? |

I've seen it many times. It's a tread separation. The adhesion between the rubber tread and the steel belt material fails. Air leaks into the growing gap causing a bubble to form. Eventually the bubble wears through and/or the tread band breaks away from the shoulder, exposing the steel belt beneath. |

Just a guess. Maybe a shift in a portion of the steel belt in the tire. The RF takes the most punishment making it the most likely to have this happen. I would think there would be some vibration. Most of the times I have seen the belt shift, the car acts like it's mis-aligned. To diagnose further, note which direction the car pulls. Swap the front tires to opposite sides. If it pulls in the other direction, it's a belt shift. This tire seems to have some concentricity issues or the RF was locked up when turned hard left. That's my 2¢ on the issue. |

yeah that would be a belt separation. could have happened from old age, an impact separation curb, pot hole, dukes of hazard jump or factory defeat. working at a tire shop i see this alot mostly tractor trailor tires because of the weight and stress applied to them. you wouldn't believe what can happen to a tire. i have found everything from chicken heads, bones, wood, stones. heck i even pulled an 1 7/8"box end wrench out of a dump truck tire and the response i got was"I wondered where that got to" |

Those cracks in the groove, look like "dry rot", to me. If your other tires have cracks, like that, I would get them off, before you have another failure, even more dramatic. |
