I am going to declare WAR on ANY A-Hole who state - we don't need thermostats - it is only for cold countries...JEEZ neanderth... no ...they are to far advanced to be insulted like these MORONS

The Valiant Charger Project is ticking over smoothly - the Only BUG in the system being the slight oil burning - if she idles for a while and you hoof it smoke, while idling or ar constant speed nada, take your foot of at speed smoke....I think it might be due to the ..... things who drove the car without a thermostat - the compression is good - taken that I am at 4500 feet - 150 to 162psi is not bad.

Sounds like valve stem seal or valve guide symptoms. High vac conditions and it pulls oil past the stem seals and guides into the cylinders.

Recently rebuilt head, or a high mileage piece?

Truth be told I do not Know - I can see the engine has been out recently - New engine mounts rebuild rad - new starter and so on - and it has been standing for quite a while -the ODO shows 67000km

Smoke on engine decel is not caused by running without a thermostat. You can run without a thermostat all you want, but the only problem you're gonna find is that your engine might not even get up to temperature (depending on how good your cooling system is). This is way more important in fuel injected cars, because they have coolant temp compensation for the fuel maps.

Missing thermostats can and will cause smoking in the long run indirectly but still- engine does not get up to temp, and you get excessive bore wear - pistons slapping around, rings not sealing properly.

Getting an engine to its correct operating temperature is critical in all cars, but since EFI compensate for temperature and so on in THEORY it should bother these cars less - but they will still wear out quicker - in a carburetor setup EVERYTHING must be spot on since it cant compensate a few degrees either way in richness nearly as quickly or accurately as a EFI engine

Actually, it will bother FI engines more. The computer will "see" a cold engine and richen the fuel mixture. Just like a carb engine running with the choke partly on.

In the real world, this isn't going to happen. Using that logic, all marine motors will smoke and wear out because they never reach any temperature that's warmer than the lake water.

There is no correlation between coolant temp and ring/bore wear. Coolant does not expand or contract the bores any more than a few tenths of a thousandth at the extremes of cold vs. operating. Running an engine before it reaches operating temp only happens from a cold start, and the actual pistons and rings aren't up to temp yet on a cold start... That's where wear comes from (cold pistons and rings on a cold start), not because of the coolant temp.
I would like for you to explain technically why/how you think running low coolant temp will guarantee bore wear..

I have seen two ford NMCA hot street engines on the dyno this year, and they were in the upper 800hp range. The coolant temp on those engines was less than 100 degrees at the end of a 1/4 mile pass, and after a whole season there was No wear on the bores at all. I've also seen a 900hp C5R engine on the dyno that never even got to 90 degrees coolant temp after a 1/4 mile pass. Those engines are started up dead cold and ran full throttle without even "warming up", and there is no wear even with the little .043" low tension rings they use.

I repeat, low coolant temp as an isolated variable will not cause an engine to wear out and smoke, but pistons and rings that aren't up to operating temp yet will...

Thermostats also act as a restirictor on many cars they allow pressure to build in other coolant pathways to evenly cool the head and cylinders. A good example of the this is a straight six f1 toyota land cruizer engine if the thermostat is left out it will cook the back cylinder because the coolant only flows though the front of the engine. I believe the same concept is at play in a slant six. So your engine coolant guage would read cooler but some parts of the engine will be to hot which can lead to cylinder damage.
