Hi fellow /6 affectionados,
Can someone please describe what the fuel tank sending unit is supposed to looks like in detail. I removed mine ('71 Dart) to examine the movable arm since I had no fuel level reading at the console after rebuilding the console and checking for broken ground connections. The movable arm terminates in a "question mark" shape. Is it supposed to have a float in that curl? Mine doesn't. Also the filters are literally falling apart. A photo or diagram would be helpful. How do you test its function once out of the tank?? Thanks again.

The wire question mark should have had a brass float clipped into it (can get at your local ford dealership for about $8-10....tell them you need a fuel sending unit float for your 1968 Mustang GT)...that probably is why you don't have any gauge reading. The "sock" is another item you can pick up....

To test the gauge you can hook it back up to the wire, ground it to the frame and sweep the question mark up and down, have a buddy turn the key to accessory/power on only and have them watch for the needle to sweep as you move it... if it's pretty badly corroded and toast it'd just provide a better peace of mind to go get a new one from Spectre at
your local auto parts store.

On the new unit you'll need to bend and tweak the pickup tube and float arm for best results.
