Early 70's head. Rectangular bosses between cyl one and two and five and six. These are not the threaded bosses that allow for engine pulling. These look like dead weight (however small). Can these be ground off flush with the head or will a leak spring? Thanks, Wayne.

I know if you put to long of a bolt in them it will spring a leak......I had to install a lifting stud and JB Weld it in to keep it from leaking. Grinding off the boss shouldn't hurt.

If your talking about the bosses that stand out from the deck area on the side of the block, on the freeze plug side, Then yes, you can grind them off.
I had to grind a large part of mine off to clear my manifolds after cutting the deck. There is a lot of material there, though there is a concern about removing stiffness from the engine by removing them.

They look like this on an unmolested motor:

This is what we're talking about here, right?

Not exactly. The flat surface on top of the head inbetween the valve cover and the edge of the head where intake /exhaust bolts up. Four bosses located there. Two are threaded for engine removal, two are not. The untapped rectangular "chunks" are what I am thinking of removing. Thanks for you patience!

I have drilled into those for EFI rail mounting and did hit water without going too deep. Be careful.

Why do you want to cut these off?

Lou
