| Post subject: | wilwood brakes? |
i was looking at wilwood brakes, and it looks like they make some disc brake conversion kits that use my existing 9" drum spindles from my 67 dart gt, is there anything else i would need to change if i bought this kit? can you get any bolt pattern or do they come with whatever stock was on the one you order? thanks |

The Wilwood kits can use your 9" drum spindles, and can be had with 4" or 4.5" bolt circle. I have never used one of those kits. Exner Geek has those on his 1962 Valiant street/strip car. I have the BBP 11.75" mopar rotors with arengineering.com caliper adapters to run Wilwood dynalite calipers (also get kits from magnumhp.com). What are your goals for the car? Street car with better brakes? performance upgrade for road racing or autoX? Lou |

The Wilwood kit is pretty much a bolt on deal. You can get a hub that lets you use either a 4 or 4 1/2" BC. The kit comes with a disclaimer that speciefies for racing and off road use only. I would guess the calipers are not as weather proof as OEM types and you have to wonder if aluminum is really the most durable material to make a hub out of. I have had mine on the car for over 3 years and they have been trouble free but I never use the car in the winter and use it mostly for long trips. I got the .800 wide ventilated disc that seems to be a good compromise between OEM and weight. I don't think the thinner solid discs would be the way to go on a street car especially if it is heavier. |

im looking for better stopping power on my good weather daily driver, exner geek, if you dont mind, how much was the conversion? did you go front and rear or just front? does the kit include everything you need? thanks |

I have run the Wilwood dynalite calipers on my 3 A bodies in various weather but no snow. No problems at all. Gone through at least 4 sets of pads on one set of calipers and no leaks. Maybe 50k on those calipers and plenty of racing. Lou |

Stopping power and fade resistance were greatly improved over 9" drums on front. I still have 10 X 1 3/4" rear drums with metalic linings. The same Mopar performance master cylinder that I used with the 9" drums worked with the Wilwood discs giving a nice high pedal. You have to remove the residual pressure valve when you convert from drums to discs. You need to get new hoses and some related fittings that aren't included in the kit. The kit is available from Jegs for about $700. You might consider upgrading to a 10" drum or disc brake spindle that features larger wheel bearings than the 9". I have had front wheel bearing problems in the past but not since I did the Wilwood conversion. The larger diameter and thicker rotors like Lou has will stop shorter and last longer than the Wilwood .81 vented rotors. |
